BASIS for each mobility project
  • Creating a structure within the programme
  • Maintaining and assuring the quality of these
    learning experiences.
  • By programme manager and the programme team
  • Not by the international coordinator
  • All about making choices
  • E.g. only host countries of which the language is
available to the students in the programme.
  • E.g. international work placement obligatory or
    not?
  • E.g. timing of the work placement must fit within
    the project period
  • The programme team decides whether there is a
    necessity for international placements
  • The project is approved off by the whole team

5
The work placement in the curriculum (1/3)
  • How does a placement fit in a programme given the
skills, knowledge, attitude, the student needs
to obtain if successful in the programme?
  • How is the work placement validated?
  • Which skills does the student need before the
    placement?
  • Which skills must the student acquire during the
    placement?
  • Which goals are to be obtained by an
international placement, compared to a local
    placement?

6
The work placement in the curriculum (2/3)
  • On a more practical level
  • Building a network of placement providers and
maintaining it through regular personal contacts,
    not only e-mail.

  • Preparation of the student How? By who?
    (Unité-conference)
  • Coaching d uring placement
  • Feedback after return based on self-evaluation,
assessment by local coach, respecting deadlines,
  • On-line handbook for students
  • Local coaches
  • Briefing of what is expected from them By who?
    By when?
  • Assessment can be very important briefing of
    coaches is a necessity
  • Regular feedback is asked What kind of feedback?
    To who?
  • A hand book for coaches can be interesting as
    well

    concerning the project
  • No e-mail overload

    electronically for maximum access

10
Project management (3/3)
  • Why not just the international coordinator to
    manage the whole project
  • Programme team not involved, while its the team
that should carry and promote the project
  • Students report to a person they do not know
    (international officer)
  • Students still had to report to a team member
about the placement easier for students to
report everything to one person, a team member
    they are familiar with.

11
WORKSHOP preparation
  • What does the preparation of international work
placements consists of in your institution?
  • Are the goals defined? In terms of skills?
  • Is there a strategy concerning international work
placements that determines the necessity? (e.g.
    skills, educational value,)
  • Networking? How?
  • Selecting students how? Structured?
  • Preparing students how? Structured?
  • Preparing work placements (coaching,
    assessment,) how? Structured?
  • Is this an overall structural approach with a
timing? If so, explain why it is structural and
not by coincidence or ad hoc.

12
WORKSHOP preparation
  • If you could change something instantly, what
would you like to change about
  • Your strategy?
  • Your educational goals?
  • Your network of work placements and the choices
    of the companies?
  • The preparation of your students
  • The preparation of the work placements?
  • What are the strong and what are the weak items
in your approach to prepare work placements
abroad? Try to look at it from
  • A students point of view
  • A management point of view
  • A colleagues point of view
  • An external auditors point of view
