• Draw a question about current events from an
  envelope draw 3 topics and choose 1
• Take 30 minutes to prepare a 7 minute speech on
  that topic
• In the prep room use files of news articles to
  support your points
• Walk down the hall to a classroom. Give the
  speech to a judge.

Publish an Issue Study Guide(1)

• Choose an issue (or be assigned one.)
• Get online and research it in depth by visiting
  news websites that have the most in depth
  explanation and current details.
• Check out a library book on the issue and read
  over key chapters.

• Look up key terms, people, concepts in the
  dictionary or encyclopedia.
• Print out or make copies of the best info in a
  packet for the team (20-30 pages.)
• Highlight key passages that would be useful for a
  person preparing a speech on the topic.

Print Station

• If you are assigned to the Extemp Print Station,
  the key idea is to print out current articles
  quickly.
• Print everything from a particular range of dates
  from a single source (New York Times for the week
  of August 3-10)
• Before printing ask yourself, Is this article
  likely to be helpful for someone giving an extemp
  speech on a related topic? Articles about
  Angelina Jolies new babys tattoo no articles
  about poverty in Africa yes.
• Work with a partner to staple and file what you
  print.

Filing

• Skim the title and the first few lines or first
  paragraph, sometimes puns or jokes in the title
  can be misleading.
• Use a world map to learn the cities and capitals
  of a country and get articles in the right place.
  (Beijing is China, etc.)
• Learn your synonyms (death penalty capital
  punishment)
• Throw out old stuff (older than 6 months) unless
  there is nothing else in the file.
• Make note of what files need work or if files are
  needed on an issue.

• You personally know about the topic and can
  talk/teach about it.
• You know there are sources/articles in our team
  files.
• You can think of three points.
• You are aware of recent developments and have
  current knowledge.

  have on Bush's relationship with Mexico?
• Should democracy promotion be the top priority
  for US foreign policy in the Middle East?
• What impact is Tony Blair's support of the war on
  terrorism having on his relationship with the
  British people?

• How can the federal government better address the
  mental health needs of Hurricane Katrina victims?
  
• Should restrictions on stem cell research be
  lifted?
• What steps should the Democrats take to regain
  credibility on the issue of national security?

Prep Time

• Think in synonyms and find the files related to
  the topic you have chosen.
• Decide your stance (answer the question yes or
  no) by making sure you will have enough sources
  (3-6) to support the side you take.
• Quickly skim for quotes or facts that will
  support your position highlight them or bracket
  them.
• Organize your sources into 3 supported points.
• Use the quotes book, a cartoon, an anecdote from
  the files or your own imagination to create an
  attention-getter (controlling image) for the
  intro and conclusion.

• Give your speech to a brick in the wall. Pretend
  this brick is a judge, be persuasive and
  elaborate on each of your points. Make eye
  contact with your brick. Smile at your brick.
• Practice stating your sources The August third
  Economist states that unemployment is at 4.5
  percent. Memorize them.
• Use your timer to manage the length of your
  speech. Get as close to 7 minutes as you can
  without going over time. Add info from an
  article or elaborate more if your speech is too
  short.

Controlling Image

• Symbolic or representative image that illustrates
  or supports your stance on a topic
• Should focus the attention of your audience on
  the topic in such a way that it encourages
  agreement
• Can have multiple elements that relate to or
  reflect your internal points
• Should be entertaining, interesting, engaging
• Cartoons, fairy tales, school, family life are
  all fertile ground for building analogies to
  national or world events
