Utilize Media and Materials
  • Day 1
  • Introduce Ghost Stories. 
  • I will inform students that they will be reading
    ghost stories and eventually writing and telling
    their own. 
  • First they must complete worksheet on literary
    elements and techniques, including connotation
    and denotation.

  • Day 2
  • Go over worksheet in class. 
  • I will make sure all students understand the
    definitions of all the words. 
  • I will take up worksheets to look over and put in
    grade book. 
  • If time, break students up into five groups of
    four.

  • Day 3
  • Give students back their worksheets. 
  • If students have not been grouped yet, I will do
    so and give each group a different Appalachian
    ghost story to read and discuss. 
  • Then I will tell them to look for different
    literary elements, techniques, denotation and
    connotation. 
  • If time, each group will retell their story.

  • Day 4
  • Start or finish having groups retell their
    stories. 
  • If time, groups will trade books and read stories
    without taking notes on it. 
  • Assign homework for students to write a ghost
    story.
  • Hand out worksheet on how to write a story.

  • Day 5
  • Take up one copy of everyones story to grade. 
  • Each student will present their story by either
    reading it or even acting it out with help of
    others. 
  • The other students listening will write down any
    elements participation grade. 
  • Students presenting will also get participation
    points.

  • Day 6
  • Catch-up day.
  • Give students list of Appalachian stories and
    Appalachian ghost stories
  • After the unit is completed I will make a
    bulletin board of the students ghost stories they
    have written. 
  • The students will then vote for which they think
    is the spookiest and that student will receive
    extra credit and a certificate.
