Title: Camplyobacter

1
Camplyobacter
2
What are common skin warts?
  • Bacterial infection caused by exposure to
  • Animals (birds, livestock, etc.)
  • Unpasteurized milk
  • Feces of those infected

3
Signs and symptoms
  • Dome- shaped growth inside the skin that may
become a raised area with small bumps within it.
  • Usually painless, but may be painful when they
    occur on the feet.
  • Often found on the hands and around or under the
    fingernails.
  • Black dots may appear in the warts.

4
Incubation and contagious periods
  • Incubation period is unknown, but estimated to be
around 3 months to several years.
  • Contagious period is unknown, but probably as
long as the wart is visible

5
How are they spread?
  • Through close person-to- person contact.

6
How to control them
  • Wash hands after touching the warts.
  • Do not use towels used by the infected child or
    caregiver/teacher

7
How to control them (continued)
  • Scratching the warts may cause further bacterial
infection or spread of virus to other sites
  • The body may make antibodies to the virus that
causes the wart so that the wart spontaniously
    resolves.
  • Alternatives may be used.Tissue-distructive
treatments such as medicated tape and liquid
nitrogen mat activate the bodys immune response
to the virus that causes the wart and hastens the
resolution of the warts. However the treated
warts may return and often require re-treatment.
  • Although warts are a viral infection, they are
very mildly contagious and most often are spread
to other parts of the affected childs body,
rather than the other children Warts do not need
to be covered like shingles or other oozing
sores. Treatment is a personal choice and not an
infection control issue for a group care setting.

8
What are the roles of the caregiver/teacher and
the family?
  • Practice careful and frequent hand washing after
    contact with the childs warts.
  • Do not let children pick at their warts because
this may cause an opening in the skin promoting
    bacterial infection.

9
Exclusion?
  • There is no need for exclusion from a group
    setting.

10
Comments
  • Many people have warts at sometime in their
    lives.
  • Immunocompromised children, including those with
HIV infection, may have more severe and
    widespread lesions.

11
Other forms of HPV
  • HPV also known as genital warts (different from
skin warts) is one of the most common sexually
transmitted infections in both men and women that
usually goes away by itself. An HPV infection
    rarely leads to cervical cancer.

12
Who can get HPV?
  • Any one who is or has been sexually active.
  • Have multiple sexual partners at any time, or
your partner has had multiple sex partners.
  • If you became sexually active at an early age.

13
Key points to remember
  • Almost all women will have HPV at some point, but
very few will develop cervical cancer. The immune
system of most women will usually suppress or get
rid of HPV. Only HPV infections that do not go
away over many years can lead to cervical cancer
  • HPV causes about 90 of all cases of cervical
    cancer.

14
Prevention
  • One way to prevent contracting HPV is to get a
    vaccine called Gardasil
  • One way to prevent cervical cancer is to have
regular pap smears to catch any changes in the
cells on your cervix that may become cancer.
Early detection is vital to staying healthy.

15
When to prevent?
  • Young girls and women from ages 9-35 who do not
    have HPV should be vaccinated.
  • Young women 18 or older or young women who are
sexually active should have regular pap smears.

16
Pictures
  • Genital warts on the cervix
  • Genital warts on the penis

17
statistics
  • The U.S. population in 2000 was 275 million.2 70
million Americans had a viral, incurable STD4 ---
    45 million with herpes5 and 25 million with HPV4
--- or about one out of every four
Americans.More women die each year from
    HPV/cervical cancer than from HIV/AIDS.8
