Title: Paraphrase

Paraphrase
  • Powerpoint presentation created by Sarah LaDow

What is a paraphrase?
  • A paraphrase is the incorporation of an authors
ideas into your text in your own words and
    sentence structures
  • For various reasons, the court system should
be avoided at all costs. Charles Dickens argues
in Bleak House that it would be better to put up
with whatever evils are inflicted upon you than
to take a suit to court (15). While such a
feeling seems melodramatic, a quick review of
court cases that have been mishandled or
    unnecessarily prolonged provide ample evidence
    for Dickens assertion.

3
Steps to the paraphrase
  • Read the passage more than once and slowly. Look
up any words you arent familiar withalso
consider the multiple meanings possible in a word
to test your understanding of the passage
  • Keep the source out of sight as you write a
    paraphrase
  • Do NOT substitute synonyms for some or most of
the words in an authors passagethis will lead
    to plagiarism
  • Use your own sentence structure and your own
    words
  • Do not comment or interpret just tell readers
the ideas that the author of the source presents
  • Check your text against the original source
  • Cite the author and the page number (this should
be fully integrated just as a quote)

4
Works Cited ?
  • Yes. Anytime you cite a source in the text, it
should appear on a works cited page at the end of
    your paper in MLA format
