DR. Martin Luther King junior
  • Martin was a leader for the civil rights movement
  • He was awarded the Nobel peace prize
  • He led a peaceful march on Washington, D.C.,
    with 250,000 people where he delivered is famous
    I have a dream speech.
  • He has been thrown in jail 29 times for
    expressing his views about the treatment of
    African Americans.
  • America celebrates the life of King on the
    federal holiday known as Martin Luther King day.
    It is held on the 3rd Monday of January each
    year.
  • Martin was assassinated on the balcony of his
    hotel.

Harriet Tubman
  • Harriet Tubman was famous for being a conductor
    for the underground railroad.
  • The underground railroad was a network of safe
    houses where run away slaves could stay on there
    journey to freedom
  • She was a very brave women that help bring over
    300 slaves to freedom.
  • She led Fredrick Douglas to freedom.
  • The south offered a 40,000 dollar reward for her
    capture.
  • She also became a leader of the abolitionist
    movement.

  • Rosa Parks is best known for not giving up her
    seat on a bus to a white man.
  • She was put in jail for her actions and resulted
    in the Montgomery Bus boycott against
    segregation.
  • She was a pioneer for the civil rights movement
  • She was awarded the presidential medal of freedom
    in 1996.
  • Parks died in 2005 at age 92. She was the first
    woman in American history to lie in state at the
    Capitol, an honor usually reserved for Presidents
    of the United States.

Madam c. j. WALKER
  • She suffered from hair loss which inspired her to
    begin experimenting with home-made hair care
    products.
  • Madam C. J. Walker transformed the hair care and
    cosmetics industry for African American women
    early in the 20th century.
  • She founded her own business and began selling
    Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower, a scalp
    conditioning and healing formula.
  • She opened a beauty school in Pittsburg employing
    at one point over 3,000 people. She offers many
    cosmetics, licensed Walker Agents, and Walker
    Schools offered employment to thousands of Black
    women.
  • She was known as on of the first African-American
    woman to become a self-made millionaire.
