Parish Nurse Survey Process
  • Study was approved by ASU Wests Institutional
    Review Board
  • Letters were sent with the survey to 86
    congregations believed to have active parish
    nurses, followed by a reminder email.
  • Confidential - s were used in place of names
  • 86 Congregations- 56 return-
  • 48 surveys returned, 38 usable
  • Graduate students- data entry

  • The purpose of this research study is to obtain
    demographic data about parish nurses to be used
    in assisting faith communities to initiate or
    expand health ministry programs and to obtain
    parish nurses perceptions of seniors needs.

Parish Nurse Survey Results
  • Parish Nurse is the title of 63 of respondents
  • Majority of nurses were in faith communities of
    1000-5000
  • Estimate 55 of congregants are over 65
  • Serve 37 people/week, which extrapolates to
  • approx. 150,000 health interventions/year
    currently in Maricopa County (2003)
  • Majority of people served are over 65 (92),
    approx. half (47) of those live alone
  • 32 nurses reported that 50-100 of their time is
    spent serving seniors

  • 71 of responding parish nurses are members of
    the faith community they serve
  • The most frequently represented denominations
    are Lutheran 34, United Methodist 18,
    Presbyterian 16, Catholic 13

  • Average hours 17/week with an additional 8 hours
    of unscheduled, unpaid time
  • 74 of respondents are in paid positions
  • Average amount of time in nursing is 33 years
  • Experience covers all the specialty areas in
    nursing
