Some Realities for our Primary 6 pupils
  • Our boys aspire to go to SJI.
  • The cut-off for affiliated schools for SJI in
    2007 was 235.
  • Currently SPS accepts all our pupils into Express
with a special scholarship given to pupils with a
score of 250 or more. Not all our pupils are
able to secure a place in the Normal (Academic)
or the Normal (Technical) class. The cut-off for
    N(A) at SPS was 163.
  • Implication is that the boys have to perform
equally well in all 4 subjects.

13
Some Realities Grade System
  • A - 91 and higher points
  • A - 75 to 90 points (please take note of the
range in A - stretches from Band 2 into Band 1)
  • B - 60 74 points
  • C - 50 59 points
  • D - 35 49 points
  • E - 20 34 points
  • U - 0 to 19 points. A candidate scoring a U
grade may be considered to have failed the PSLE
and asked to repeat Primary 6 doing Foundation
    Studies.

14
Some Realities Grade System
  • Foundation Studies
  • Band 1 - 85 to 90 points
  • Band 2 - 70 - 84 points
  • Band 3 - 50 69 points
  • Band 4 - 30 - 49 points
  • U - 0 to 29 points. A candidate scoring a U
grade may be considered to have failed the PSLE
and asked to repeat Primary 6 doing Foundation
    Studies.

15
The Schools 2007 Performance
  • Highest T-score 273(4As), an increase of 4
    points
  • Pupils scoring
  • 4 As - 2
  • 3 As 12, an increase of 6
  • 2 As - 20
  • A score of over 235 and above 90
  • Pupils who scored 231 and above 102, an
    increase of 28 boys

16
The Schools 2007 Performance
We improved our performance in overall passes (A
- C) for CL ? 88.7 (up 2.1) ML ? 72.7 (up
12.7) TL ? 97.1 (up 0.1) EL is maintained at
100 for the second year running.
17
The Schools 2007 Performance
We improved our performance in overall quality
passes (A - A) for EL? 60.3 (up 1.1) CL?
54.6 (up 12.5) ML ? 27.3 (up 22.3) Math ?
55.9 (up 2.1) Science ? 55.9 (up 2.8)
18
Some Realities T-Score
  • T-Score is not the mark that a pupil obtains in
    the examination.
  • T-Score gives the rank or position of a pupils
performance compared to all other pupils in that
subject whereas the mark obtained in the
examination only shows how good the pupil is in
    that subject.
  • All 4 / 3 subjects that the pupil offers carry
    equal weighting.

19
Some Realities T-Score
  • How is it calculated?
  • T 50 10 (X Y) / Z
  • X is the pupils mark for the subject
  • Y is the average mark (mean) scored by all the
    pupils
  • Z is the spread of the marks around the average
    mark
  • (standard deviation)
  • We have no way of ascertaining what the Y and Z
    for any particular exam is
  • ? Pupils need to put in their best effort for all
    subjects

20
Some Realities T-Score
  • Average score (Y) obtained by all pupils for a
    subject is 68.0
  • Spread of marks around the average score (Z) IS
    14.0
  • Therefore a child scoring 80 will obtain a score
    of
  • T 50 10 (X Y) / Z or
  • T 50 10(80-68) / 14 58.57
  • Another child scoring 50 will obtain a score of
  • T 50 10(50-68) / 14 37.14
  • The aggregate score is the sum of the T-Scores
    for the 4 subjects.

21
Some Realities Grade System
  • A - 91 and higher points
  • A - 75 to 90 points
  • B - 60 74 points
  • C - 50 59 points
  • D - 35 49 points
  • E - 20 34 points
  • U - 0 to 19 points. A candidate scoring a U
grade may be considered to have failed the PSLE
and asked to repeat Primary 6 doing Foundation
    Studies.

22
Some Realities T-Score
  • Therefore in the example cited, the pupil based
on his raw scores should obtain 1 A and 1 C.
  • But after applying the formula for T-scores, he
    receives 1 C and 1 D.

How parents can work with the school and the boys
  • Pacing your son and monitoring his work he may
not have developed the maturity and discipline to
    work at a steady pace
  • Those who have been promoted to mainstream
because they have passed just 1 subject, need a
lot of work on their foundation
  • Communicating and setting realistic targets for
    your son

37
How parents can work with the school and the boys
  • Working with the teachers and reinforcing the
importance of completing their homework assigned
    by their teachers
  • My teachers will be very firm with their pupils
when they do not complete homework assigned to
them ? sending mixed signals as to which homework
is more important can be frustrating for your son
  • Please ensure that your son takes assessments
seriously ? these assessments serve as a
    yardstick of his current progress

38
How parents can work with the school and the boys
  • Providing your son balance offering a CCA can
be helpful for Direct School Admission (DSA)
    possibilities and otherwise
  • DSA offered for Sports as well as Math and
Science (performance in Math or Science from P5
is noted participation in competitions also
noted). Please note that boys have still to
satisfy cut-off points even when they are
    accepted under DSA.
  • Ensuring that the boys spend their holidays
    wisely

39
Post-PSLE timetable
  • Sharing sessions by their seniors of what
Secondary school life is all about boys from
SJI and SPS have been coming over
  • Special enrichment classes after PSLE as part of
    our Josephian Programme
  • Hope to arrange
  • Learning journeys and talks by professionals to
enable our boys to have a sense of working life /
    work ethics
  • Pep talks from Secondary School teachers
  • We need your support for these 2 initiatives

40
Conclusion
  • Not promising miracles
  • Hope that if school and home can work together
from the start of the year, more of our boys can
    achieve their academic best
  • Will be working closely with P6 teachers and the
boys to try to achieve this
