  • Lesson 4
  • Factoring

2
  • 3rd part of question 4.
  • F
    O I L
  • Two ways to factor a polynomial with a
    coefficient a, other than one.
  • 1. Splitting the middle term.
  • Step 1 Take the 1st and last
coefficients and multiply them together. From
    above polynomial

3
  • Step 2 Next ask, what times what
equals the new number, but when adding the
factors together we get the middle coefficient of
    the trinomial.
  • Step 3 Replace the middle term
with the new numbers and then group the 1st two
terms and the last two terms. This is called
    grouping the terms.

4
  • Step 4 Factor the grouped terms.
  • Should be the same!
  • Step 5 Put factors in one set of
parentheses and put group already in parentheses
    as other factor.
  • Ex. 1

  • Ans.

5
  • 2. Factor Fish
  • Step. 1 Draw fish
  • Step2 Put 1st and last term on top
  • of box.
  • Step 3 Put middle term on tail.
  • Step 4 In box put factors of 1st
  • term. Do the same for the last term.
  • Step 5 Multiply across in box to
  • get the product.
  • Step 6 Add these products up to see if
    they add up
  • to what is in the tail.
  • Step 7 Group diagonally to get
    factors.
