Rationale
  • Knowledge Statement
  • Through this unit, students in grade levels K-4
will develop and refine knowledge of the
    scientific processes through various
    developmentally appropriate experiments.
  • Brief Description
  • Students in grades K-4 are actively engaged in
    chemistry
  • experiments ranging from mixing water colors to
    pop rockets while
  • learning the scientific process through guided,
    inquiry and challenging
  • activities. Upon completing these level
    appropriate activities the
  • students will perform an at home scientific
    experiment involving water.

6
Target Science TEKS
  • Target TEKS ( .2) Scientific processes. The
student develops abilities necessary to do
scientific inquiry in the field and the
    classroom.
  • (A) ask questions about organisms, objects, and
    events
  • (B) plan and conduct simple descriptive
    investigations
  • (C) gather information using simple equipment and
    tools to extend the senses
  • (D) construct reasonable explanations using
    information and
  • (E) communicate findings about simple
    investigations.

9
Growing Crystals
Grade Second Type of Activity Guided
Activity Learning Goal Students observe and
study the formation of crystals.
10
Crystals

Key Question Will sugar water create crystals?
11
Chalk Fizz
  • Grade Third
  • Type of Lesson Guided
  • Learning GoalThe students
  • experiment with acids and their
  • effects on the calcium carbonate in
  • chalk.

12
What changes do you see?
water

lemon
vinegar
13
Bubble Mania
  • Grade Kindergarten
  • Type of Lesson Inquiry
  • Learning GoalThe students
  • observe and make observations about
  • bubbles. They will experiment, make
  • inferences and draw conclusions while
  • examining the properties of bubbles.

14
The Biggest Bubbles..
Cookie Cutter?
The Bubble Machine?
Flyswatter?
A hanger?
Bubble Wand?
What else can you think of?
15
Magnetic Attraction
  • Grade First
  • Type of Lesson Inquiry
  • Learning Goal Students will predict
  • and test objects to determine whether
  • or not they are magnetic. They will
  • record their finds on a chart provided
  • by the teacher.

16
Are These Magnetic?
17
Sink or Float
  • Grade Second
  • Type of Activity Inquiry
  • Learning Goal Students explore the concept of
sinking and floating through making predictions
of whether certain objects will sink or float.
    Students test their predictions through
experimenting with a variety of objects.

18
Will These Sink or Float?
Frisbee
19
Mix It Up!
  • Grade Kindergarten
  • Type of Lesson Challenge
  • Learning Goal The students will mix
  • food coloring red, blue, yellow, and
  • green to investigate, communicate
  • and record changes in colors.

20

Color Mixing Chart

What other colors can you make?

Yellow Green
21
Diffusion of Molecules
  • Grade Third
  • Type of Lesson Challenge
  • Learning GoalThe students
  • observe molecular movement in
  • performing a chemistry investigation.

22
Diffusion of Molecules
  • Key Question How long does it take for the dye
to dissolve in the cold water versus the warm
    water.

23
Moo-Velous Butter
  • Grade Fourth
  • Type of Lesson Challenge
  • Learning Goal The student
  • investigates how motion (energy)
  • creates a chemical change that turns
  • cream (liquid) into butter (solid).

24
Engagement
  • What is your favorite milk?
  • Chocolate, Strawberry or white milk?

25
Pop Rocket
  • Grade Level Fourth
  • Type of Activity Guided Lesson
  • Learning Goal Students understand
  • Newtons Third Law of Motion through
  • building a simple rocket.

26
Ready For Blast Off!!
Predictions
What will your rocket do? Why will it do that?
27
The Launch
5, 4, 3, 2, 1Blastoff!!!
How far did your rocket go?
28
Conclusion
Did your rocket go the farthest?
