PORTeL The Concept
PORTeL The Concept
  • Concept Provide forestry and land managers with
    spatial visualization and spatial analysis
capability within the tools and applications they
    use to do their work.
  • Acts as an interface for working with
    applications (inventory, planning or monitoring
    programs) and viewing results.
  • Managers can use the map interface to
    drag-and-drop selections into the applications,
do queries, classify inputs and results.
  • Managers can also draw roads, mills and polygons
on their own layers without disturbing the basic
cartography, while still allowing them to share
plans (roads, etc) with other users.
  • Spatial analysis capability allows route
analysis, calculation of road distances and so
on, facilitating data entry and calculation.

PORTeL The Component
PORTeL The Component
  • PORTeL is an OLE automation server control that
can be easily dropped into other applications
    (within days).
  • PORTeL is available for licensing to be deployed
    into other (non-FRA) applications.
  • Currently it can be incorporated in PowerBuilder
    applications relatively easily.
  • Development plan is to expand its environment
capabilities so it can be incorporated into
programs based on VB, Delphi, C and other
    common development environments.

7
Facilitated Setup of Scenarios with PORTeL
  • PORTeL leverages GIS data for OperMAX
  • Harvest Block Data
  • Mill Requirements (volumes prices)
  • Block-Mill Road Distances
  • Road construction requirements

8
PORTeL used to configure block operations
constraints
  • Allow Harvest blocks to be specified as Available
or Unavailable based on any kind of trait or from
    the map.
  • This can be done for block-system, block-season,
    block-year decisions

9
PORTeL used to configure block operations
constraints
  • In order to better facilitate block
configuration, PORTeL allows managers to quickly
and easily select the desired blocks by clicking
them on the PORTeL map interface. Then these
block can be configured to reflect
  • Different Harvest systems (cable, clear-cut,
commercial thin etc.) can be available to operate
    only in some blocks
  • ex. Thinning ONLY in Wildlife designated Blocks
  • ex. Cable ONLY in high slopes
  • Different Blocks constrained by season
  • ex. Winter ONLY for marshy blocks
  • Different Blocks constrained by year
  • ex. Year 1 unavailable for blocks requiring roads
    or assessments/studies

10
PORTeL Block Access Configuration
  • In order to better facilitate block access
configuration, PORTeL allows managers to quickly
and easily select the desired blocks by clicking
them on the PORTeL map interface. Then these
block can be configured to reflect any lump-sum
requirement for harvest of a block(s) such as
  • - Access Roads
  • - Camp Roads
  • - Bridges
  • - Remediation works
  • - Assessments (wildlife, terrain etc.)
  • Decisions/schedules are modeled for all these
    requirements as Binary (0,1) decisions

Block B3 Cant be harvested until the roads CR1,
AR3 and the Bridge are built B3 also has an
opening cost (E3). Tertiary roads are required
in proportion to the amount of harvesting carried
out in a block. The following demonstration
illustrates how PORTeL is used to facilitate road
building.
12
Often, managers will find themselves wanting to
harvest in stands that have no road access.
13
With PORTeL, managers can access theses stands by
drawing in their own roads.
14
Managers are then able to select the blocks that
become accessible from the new road. It is
simply a drag and drop operation.
15
PORTeL automatically calculates road length.
Managers need only provide the unit cost (/km)
of road building and the total road cost is
displayed.
16
ForMAX
  • PORTeL has been integrated into ForMAX

17
PORTeL can be used to visualize the forest
characterization employed in the ForMAX model.
PORTeL allows managers to manipulate their data
and applications. (Tipos de masa is Spanish
for species type)
18
PORTeLs right click menu allows managers to
Select Layers, Show Report, Classify and
Un-Classify.
19
Managers can restrict the view to the basic
topography or they can also include User Defined
(UD) layers in the view.
20
PORTeL provides a visually pleasing means of
viewing and manipulating the data.
21
PORTeL can be resized, maximized or minimized at
any time.
22
Managers can use PORTeL to zoom-in for a more
detailed view or zoom-out to view a larger area.
23
FIS
  • PORTeL has been integrated into FIS

24
PORTeL is used by managers who want spatial
visualization and map interface capabilities to
view and manipulate their data and applications.
25
PORTeL gives managers the ability to select one
(Point Select) or multiple (Multiple Select)
blocks using its map interface.
26
When using the Multiple Select and Group Edit
function in combination, block attribute values
can be edited on multiple blocks simultaneously.
27
A block attribute value for all the select blocks
has now been edited.
28
PORTeL can classify all blocks with respect to
any block attribute.
29
PORTeL provides a visually pleasing means of
viewing and manipulating the data.
30
PORTeL can be resized, maximized or minimized at
any time.
31
Managers can use PORTeL to zoom-in for a more
detailed view or zoom-out to view a larger area.
32
Managers can use PORTeL to manage forest
inventory.
33
PORTeL provides spatial visualization and map
interface capabilities to view and manipulate
inventory.
34
PORTeL gives managers the ability to select one
(Point Select) or multiple (Multiple Select)
blocks using its map interface.
35
Once blocks are selected, the corresponding block
data is highlighted in the database table.
36
Managers can create a forest inventory report
based on the selected blocks.
37
PORTeL makes forest inventory reports quick and
easy to generate.
