Title: Grandpa to Great Grandson in one Fraternity
1Grandpa to Great Grandson in one Fraternity
- Generations in the Shrine
2Whats the problem?
- Why dont members attend like they used to?
- Why dont more younger men join?
- Why do they quit so quickly?
3I believe

- Born before 1946
- Chain of Command
- Loyalty is a hallmark
5Somewhere in the middle
- Baby Boomers
- Born between 1945 and 1964
- Change of Command
- Very Competitive
- Very Optimistic
6In between
- Generation X
- Born between 64 and 79
- Dont Command

- Columbine
- Internets instant information
- Chat rooms
- Cell phones
- 911
12How do you see them?
- Millennial Kids are annoying,
- Generation Xers are tattooed slackers,
- Boomers are money driven workaholics,
- Traditionalists are drinking Metamucil milkshakes
on the porch swing.
13My generation is viewed positively by other
generations.
- 30 of Boomers said NO
- 24 of Traditionalists said NO
- And for Xers 60 said NO
- Source When Generations Collide, by Lynne C.
Lancaster and David Stillman published by Harper
Press
14Stereotypes cause resentment.
- Xers resent Traditionalists for being resistant
to change and unwilling to hand over the reins. - Boomers resent Millennials for changing jobs so
easily and demanding balance in their lives. - Millennials resent Boomers for leaving the
planet a mess.
15Attitudes and Ideas Changed.
- Diversity will continue to expand
- Concept of Family has Changed
- Elitist organizations are Feared and Suspect
- People must be Respected
- Their organizations must be relevant
- Value is expected
16We never changed.
- We still do things exactly as we always have
- We still expect our members to regard us well,
without giving them relevant reasons - We dont allow people to fail
- Our rituals, ceremonies, etc., have not made any
change since the invention of the light bulb.
17All hope is lost?
- What can be done?
- What can I do?
- What can we as Shriners do?
- The answer lies in understanding each other, and
that happens when we
18Listen!
19Are We Relevant?

23What can be done?
- Change focus of us to them
- Learn that Membership is the only reason for our
existence. - Focus on important things, not extemporaneous
things. - Give them what they want.
- Not Sure what they Want?
24Listen!
25Give them what they want!
- Fellowship
- Friendship
- Role with the Family
- Role with the Community
- Chance to be the Leader
26It all can be called enrollment.
- An enrolled member stays.
- An non-enrolled member doesnt.
- We lose more than 50 percent of our newest
members within 5 years. - What does that tell us?
- Do we provide value?
27Enrollment?
- First impressions are lasting
- Good impressions last a while, bad impressions
last longer. - Does the lodge give the member satisfaction?
- Does the experience instill pride, and enrollment?
28Some positive Enrolling Steps
- Talk to the new member
- Listen to the new member
- No man stands alone
- What does he enjoy, does he have children, etc.

old men - Dont ignore them
- Dont take them for granted
- If your doing ritual, do it well, and explain it
