Currently, some of the schools have more than one
webmanager.

• If you have more than one person that publishes
  to your school site, that person MUST HAVE A COPY
  OF THIS MANUAL.
• I find that most of the time, these are where I
  am finding the problems out there. Such as,
  redundant photos, misplaced images, HUGE FILES
  that make the server slow, and personal
  information that should not be viewed by the
  world wide web.
• If I find these types of folders or files that
  are in the root directory, (such as photo
  galleries), and not placed under YOUR school
  folder, I delete them IMMEDIATELY. It is your
  responsibility to make sure that everyone posting
  to the website knows where to publish and how to
  reduce file size of images. (This includes high
  school computer teachers publishing to the web)
• NO STUDENT IS ALLOWED TO PUBLISH ON THE DESOTO
  COUNTY SERVER. You are not to give out your
  username and password to your students. You may
  show off their work on your teacher website
  pages, however.

Legal Issues

• All students posting information on the school
  sites are REQUIRED to have the Press Release
  Permission Slip for the Internet on file in your
  classroom or the library.
• You can get this Release form in the manual or
  from your media person in your school.
• We also have a new board policy on electronic
  usage. Please read this very carefully as it
  pertains to the pics that you post on the website

• If you have other instructors at your school
  publishing such as SITE CONTRIBUTORS, they will
  need to let you know that there is new content so
  that there is 2 sets of eyes watching.
• If I find content that the board may deem
  unallowable, I will delete it immediately and let
  you know.
• For this reason, I suggest the following

• Do not let them hyperlink to the following types
  of sites
• Gaming sites (these have lots of bad lang. on
  their forums and can easily pick up viruses).
• Violent sites (obviously)
• Any kind of site that you would be embarrassed if
  an administrator walked in and saw them
  accessing.
• Sexual Sites (watch these carefully). Even
  Britney Spears sites can be iffy. Photo Editing
  is rampant these days.
• Age-inappropriate sites for their web page.
• If they MUST place a link on their webpage,
  please DO NOT let them link to anything that is
  not educational.
• Anything else you deem inappropriate, dont let
  them do it. Please.
• You must also watch some of the banners on those
  pages. They are uncontrollable, however, can be
  a problem in slowing down your server.

Use an imaging software to reduce file size.

• File Size is becoming a HUGE problem.
• You are only allowed 1 Gigabyte of size on your
  site. Guess what? This means no 1000 SIZE
  pictures anymore!
• You already have an images folder and place them
  all there or make an images folder under EACH
  folder and place them there.
• In addition, please teach your students AND
  FELLOW TEACHERS POSTING organization.

Photo Galleries

• This is tricky. I know it is fun and easy,
  however, you MUST REDUCE FILE SIZE.
• Remind everyone to fix their digital camera
  setups to 640x480.
• Make sure that you save your images in the images
  folder and not the common or the files folder.

Teacher Web Page Templates

• Each teacher can easily create a web site at home
  just like with schoolnotes.
• Their website icon is located under the My
  Tools tab. It is created just like Microsoft
  Word and most teachers have this in their
  classroom.
• In addition, they can add calendar events that
  post automatically on the front page of your
  website.

Other Teacher Website Sites

• Most popular www.schoolnotes.com This website
  is the last of its kind to be free for teachers.
  We paid 7.95 for each teacher to have their own
  website free from banners and advertisements.
  All they have to do is copy their schoolnotes
  information and paste it into their new web page.

• www.teacherweb.com
• This one is NOT FREE, however, many teachers like
  it because they can customize their pages.
  Currently, the fee is 27 per year.
• OUR SITE WILL DO THE SAME THINGS..
• If your teacher insists on paying for their own
  website, you may re-direct it from that teachers
  page.

Lets talk about rights

• YOU ARE THE SITE ADMINISTRATOR
• Certified Teachers are known as teachers.
• Office staff and non-certified staff are known as
  directory only.
• Site Contributors are librarians, counselors,
  athletic depts., etc.
• Teacher plus site contributor means that a
  teacher may teach music, but also be the band
  director and need to post events.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

• Most times you will need to hit the ShiftEnter
  keyboard combination to do a single spaced line
  in a web editor like Frontpage or Netscape
  Composer.
• Name your files short filenames so that you can
  be consistent with hyperlinks.

PICTURE SIZE

• 250 X 250 IS A GOOD SIZE FOR A BASIC PIC
• YOU MAY NOT USE JAVASCRIPT ON OUR SITE.
• YOU may USE A FLASH ANIMATION SLIDESHOW. WE ARE
  GOING TO HAVE A TRAINING ON THIS AS SOON AS I
  FIGURE OUT A DATE.
