2What is a BTEC First Diploma?
- A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related
course. You learn by completing projects and
assignments that are based on realistic workplace
situations, activities and demands. - A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs
grades A C and is taken as a full-time course,
for one year.
3An Example of the First Core Unit
Public Services Police/Fire/Ambulance/Armed
Forces/NHS etc. What is their purpose, role,
their service work to the public and their
responsibilities Range of jobs, and conditions
of service How to apply and be selected,
training and career development.
4What are the entry requirements?
- You will normally need to have at least one of
the following - A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by
a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at
grades D-G - Related work experience
- Other related level 1 or 2 qualifications
5What is the course structure?
- The course is made up of six units 3 core units
that everyone takes and 3 specialist units. The
specialist units enable you to study a particular
area in more depth. - The specialist units will be negotiated later,
and are dependant on staff and facilities.

- All students take the 3 core units
- The Public Services
- Public Service Skills
- Public Service Fitness
- This unit will be assessed via an Integrated
Vocational Assignment (IVA). This is an
externally moderated piece of work in which
students examine a chosen service in depth.

8How is the course assessed?
- All units are assessed, graded and an overall
grade for the qualification is awarded - 100 Coursework No Exam
- Pass / Merit / Distinction Grades

- What can I do at the end of the course?
- With further training or study, students can go
into a wide range of public sector occupations in
both the uniformed and non-uniformed sectors such
as - Local Government Administration
- Customs and Excise
- Ambulance Services
- Police Services
- Fire Services
- Care Work
- Armed Forces Navy, Army and Air Force

- A BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment
and provides a good grounding for further part
time or fulltime study for a more advanced or
specialised course/training such as - BTEC National Diploma / Certificate / Award in
Public Services - Other Level 3 qualifications such as GCE or
Vocational A levels
