Examples of Cyberbullying

• Flaming the act of posting deliberately hostile
  messages on the internet usually using vulgar
  language
• Harassment repeatedly sending nasty, mean and
  insulting messages can be via email, text or
  through other means
• Denigration Dissing someone on-line posting
  gossip or rumors about s/o online to damage their
  reputation or friendships
• Impersonation Pretending to be s/o else in a
  chatroom or in an IM situation and sending
  messages as that person which will embarrass them

• Outing Sharing the secrets of s/o without their
  permission on-line
• Trickery talking s/o into sharing intimate
  details of their life online and sharing it with
  others
• Exclusion deliberately excluding s/o from an
  online group or game
• Cyberstalking repeated, intense harrasment and
  denigration that includes threats and/or creates
  significant fear

Why schools need to be involved

• Its happening at home, yes, but it can happen at
  school as well
• Some schools allow kids to use their networks off
  campus
• What happens after-hours affects a childs
  productivity during school hours
• Cyberbullying may be related to real life
  bullying

How to Stop Them

• Host an internet awareness day at your school or
  in your district.
• Have the cyber-crime folks from the local
  precinct come talk to your students.
• Make sure that cyberbullying is something that
  your district takes seriously.
• Make a presentation to your PTA to help parents
  understand their children.

• Look at the situation and give them other avenues
  of justice (VA)

• Be boring theyll move on (MG)
• Begin a student-led group to teach kids about
  cyber-safety.
