Title: Dissolved Oxygen Levels at Lake Munson, and its tributaries
1Group IV 2008
Dissolved Oxygen Levels at Lake Munson, and its
tributaries Ognjen Colakovic , Greg Herman,

2Background on Dissolved Oxygen
- Dissolved oxygen is gaseous O2 dissolved in
water. - Aquatic plants and algae dispense oxygen directly
into the water via photosynthesis and it is also
absorbed directly from the atmosphere. - Fish use their gills to breathe the dissolved
oxygen. - Oxygen levels change with the time of day, the
temperature, altitude and the season. -
3Background on Dissolved Oxygen
- The colder the water the more oxygen that is
able to be absorbed the warmer the water, the
less oxygen that can be absorbed. - Low altitudes are more conducive to the
dissolving of oxygen because of the higher
atmospheric pressure. - Water quality is considered good if there are 8-9
parts per million at 20 C.
4Our purpose
- Our goal was to determine which part of the Lake
Munson system contained the most dissolved
oxygen. - Our areas of interest included the entering
tributary, the main lake, and the exiting
tributary.
5How we went about our business
- We designated a portion of each area where we
would take our sample

6How we went about our business
- We took three samples from each area of interest

We then fixed and titrated the sample to
determine the dissolved oxygen level

12What we concluded
- Results from each week we went to the lake (a
total of three consecutive weeks) showed that the
exiting tributary contained nearly 1ppm more than
both the exiting and entering tributary - We concluded that the exiting tributary contained
the most dissolved oxygen

Do not drive onto protected Leon County property

the FWC agents like to blend in with the

20Thanks!
- We would like to thank Ms. Fields for providing
us with such a great learning experience. - Although the Group IV project was intimidating at
first, tedious at times, and something I lost a
great deal of sleep over (its 205 AM right now)
it was a lot of fun to do and a very valuable
experience for all the members in our group. - So thanks again Ms. Fields!
