Background Information relating to CSCI

• The Terminal Illness (TI) category was set up
  under the Registered Homes Act 1984 and the
  category describes Palliative care, however

• It was considered that Palliative Care should
  be available in all care homes, looking at
• Holistic Care
• Palliative care needs and training
• Support and resources
• (National Minimum Standards Standard 4)

What is Terminal Care?

• Terminal Care was used to describe the care
  provided to residents/patients who had a terminal
  illness that could not be cured

What is Palliative Care?

• In 2002 the World Health Organisation
  described palliative care as
• the active holistic care of patients with
  advanced progressive illness.the goal of
  palliative care is the best quality of life for
  patients and their families..

What has replaced the TI category?

• Care Homes being able to provide Palliative
  Care as part of their holistic care, reducing the
  risk of residents being transferred at a
  difficult time
• (think about the consequences this will have on
  the residents/families)

• Not being employed by the Care Homes directly,
  therefore what impact my role has on advanced
  clinicians in order to promote good practice

  necessary.

• A care home in Tovil regularly uses the LCP
  with good effect and the working document is
  second nature to them now!
