INTRODUCTION
  • Malaria burden in Kenya
  • Almost every person in Kenya is exposed to the
    risk of malaria infection in his or her life. 70
    live in areas where these risks occur every year.
  • At least 4 million clinical attacks of malaria to
    Children under 5 years occur annually. Over 50
    of these attacks are managed by mothers at home
    using medicine from shops
  • Malaria is the most common condition accounting
    for 30 of all new cases attended a out-patient
    departments. 19 end up with admissions in
    hospitals. The case fatality ranges between 3.5
    8.5.
  • 4 10 million school days and 170 million
    working days are lost each year due to malaria
    (MoH 2000).

Objective
  • To reduce Malaria Mortality and Morbidity by 30
    among Kenya's Population by the year 2006 and
    maintain that level of reduction through to 2010.

  • Mid-term review process for the UNICEF country
    programme
  • PARTNERSHIP BUILDING
  • Held consultative meetings with PSI on the social
    marketing strategy of ITNs.
  • Discussions with MoWD to incorporate malaria
    control activities in water projects
  • Discussion with LSHTM to develop systems for
    prediction and detection of malaria epidemics in
    EA 
  • Advocacy visit by J.J. Rawlings, former Ghanaian
    president and UN special ambassador

INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING
  • DOMC staff attended abridged course in IMCI in
    Tanzania
  • 12 Districts supported for social mobilization of
    ITNs
  • DOMC participation in National Agricultural show
  • Parasitologist in DOMC attended workshop on
    People and Malaria
  • Malaria epidemic preparedness workshop held for
    six epidemic prone Districts
  • Donation of laboratory reagents to DOMC
  • Purchase of equipment for DOMC offices
  • Two NMCP attending a course on Planning malaria
    control in Nazareth Ethiopia
