ISSUES
  • UK shortages of trained qualified staff in a
    no. of key areas in danger of worsening
  • Shortages of doctors, nurses, therapists,
    teachers, engineers, pilots, vets etc etc creates
    inability to function as a public service or
    compete in a global modern economy
  • 2 key resolutions
  • - education/training of home grown (domestic)
    workers and
  • - internal migration of overseas workers
  • Recruiting overseas is a chicken and egg affair
    and often impractical for most employers
  • BUT..

ISSUES contd
  • Govt has given a boost to bringing in the skills
    people our businesses need through new managed
    migration programmes changes in the machinery
    of govmt
  • HSMP reintroduced Highly Skilled Migrant
    Programme (works on a points system quals,
    earnings ability experience) to bring in the
    best brains
  • SAWS extended post war Seasonal Agricultural
    Workers Scheme for foreign farm workers to do a
    bigger range work (arable livestock all year
    round)
  • Work Permits UK - has a small business unit to
    ensure all sizes and types of business have the
    info. they need about work permits to recruit
    easily from abroad
  • DTI, DfES, DWP (JCP) HO continue to work with
    industry to identify areas with labour or skills
    shortages (using managed ways for people to come
    work, making it easier for UK businesses to
    bring in skilled foreign workers, while tackling
    abuse of asylum system by illegal immigrants
