Romanticism
  • An 18th and 19th century literary movement that
    is frequently characterized by the following
  • Settings that are exotic or remote locations.
    Old castles or mansions frequently play a big
    role.
  • Language and characters that are frequently
    marked by emotional intensity.
  • An interest in the irrational realms of dreams,
    folk superstitions, legends, and ghosts.
  • A hero or heroine who rebels against the social
    norms of his or her society.

Romanticism cont
  • An intense interest in nature and its beauty
    and/or fierceness.
  • A depiction of emotion and imagination.
  • A depiction of the beauties of nature.
  • Be able to explain how Hunchback is an example of
    Romanticism.

Symbol
  • An object, person, or place that has a meaning in
    itself and that also stands for something larger
    than itself, usually an idea or concept some
    concrete thing which represents an abstraction.
  • Ex. A character turning into an insect could
    represent a person feeling isolated or
    dehumanized.

Theme
  • The central or dominant idea behind the story
    the most important aspect that emerges from how
    the book treats its subject. Sometimes the theme
    is easy to see and sometimes it may be more
    difficult.

    Abandonment, Intolerance, Betrayal

Gothic Literature
  • Typically, a gothic novel includes a dark
    setting, preferably in an old castle tension
    created through suspense the appearance of
    mysterious signs that act as warnings or
    prophecy the stirring of strong emotions and of
    course a threatened woman in need of rescue.
  • Be able to identify Gothic elements of Hunchback.

Tragedy
  • A work that shows a conflict between an
    individual and a higher force that ends badly for
    the individual.
  • There are many examples of characters who would
    be considered tragic in Hunchback. Be able to
    identify and explain at least a few of them.

Allegory
  • A story that represents abstract ideas or moral
    qualities.
  • As such, an allegory has both a literal level and
    a symbolic level of meaning.
  • Be able to explain what makes Hunchback
    allegorical.

Allusion
  • A reference to a person, place, poem, book,
    event, or movie outside of the story that the
    author expects the reader will recognize.
  • Look for and identify examples of allusions in
    the novel.

Metaphor
  • A comparison of two things that are basically
    dissimilar but are brought together in order to
    create a sharp image.
  • Identify Hugos use of metaphors as you continue
    to read.

Simile
  • A comparison between two different things using
    either like or as.
  • Identify similes as you read Hunchback.

Tragic Hero
  • The main character in a tragedy in order to fit
    the definition, the hero must have a tragic flaw
    which causes his or her downfall.
