  • LESSON 192 USING ZOOM IN WORD 2000
  • Microsoft Word 2000, part of the Office 2000
suite, has very interesting features. One feature
is being able to view more than one page. It
allows you to see how several printed pages will
look. The tool that does this is called the
    "zoom" tool.
  • To view several pages at the same time, from
within an open document, click on View on the
menu bar at the top of your document. Select
    Print Layout mode.
  • Click again on View and this time click on Zoom.
In the "Zoom to" section click next to "Many
pages". Select the number of pages you want to
view by clicking in the monitor icon that appears
below. Clicking on the up or down arrows in the
Percent box lets you resize the document pages
as they appear on your screen.
  • Now you'll see how your printed pages will look
    before you print them out.

  • LESSON 193 LET THE COMPUTER DIAL UP YOUR FRIENDS
  • Microsoft Outlook will dial the phone numbers of
people or businesses that you save in Outlook.
You can dial from within any module.
  • If you have a modem in your computer and it's
connected to a phone line, click on Tools and
then on Address Book. You can also open your
address book from within any Outlook module by
    pressing the CtrlShiftB keys.
  • From within the Address Book, select a contact
or type a partial name to find that name. After
selecting a contact click on Tools, Actions and
then on Dial. This will open the New Call dialog
box. You can select the contact you wish to call
from within the New Call dialog box, click on the
Dialing Properties button to access features like
disabling call waiting, dial a number to access a
local or long distance line, or even enter a
calling card number to use when dialing long
distance calls. There's even an option to enter
your credit card starting with O, and a place to
    enter a "personal pin" number.
  • Use Outlook's dialing feature to make placing
    phone calls faster and easier.

  • LESSON 194 - WINKEY - MAKE YOUR WINDOWS KEY WORK
    FOR YOU
  • The Windows key, located in the lower left
corner of your keyboard, has several uses. With a
program called "Winkey", which is available as a
free download, you'll have many more uses for the
Windows key. You'll be able to customize and
create your own Windows key-based shortcuts.
  • It has several extra shortcuts built in. Examples
    are
  • Windows key C Control Panel
  • Windows key P Printers
  • Windows key U Dial-Up Networking
  • Windows key Y My Computer
  • Any preinstalled shortcuts you don't want can be
removed by opening the program (click on the
Windows icon it places in the systems tray),
highlighting the shortcut and clicking the Remove
    button.
  • To create shortcuts, simply open the program and
click the Add key. In the next screen, in the
command line, select the file or program you want
easy access to. Use the "Browse to File" or
"Browse to Folder" buttons at the end of the
Command line to navigate to your favorites. Then
select a shortcut key from the dropdown list in
the Shortcut Key line. Now you have given
yourself instant access to all your favorites!
  • The Winkey file is easy to download and install.
  • You can create your own folder by double-clicking
on My Computer and then on the icon that
represents your C drive. Right- click anywhere
in the window that displays the contents of your
C drive, select New and then Folder. A new
folder will be opened. It will be named "New
Folder" and that name will be highlighted. Type
the name you wish to give your folder and press
the Enter key. Now close the My Computer window
by clicking on the X at the top right corner of
    the window.
  • To download the file, point your browser to
    www.copernic.com/winkey. The Download section
appears at the top left of your screen. Windows
may want to save the downloaded file on the
Desktop. Click the Browse button and navigate to
the My Downloads folder. Click save and the file
will be downloaded to that folder. The download
should take about 3-4 minutes on a dial-up modem
connection. DLS and Cable modem connections will
complete the download in much less time.
  • Now, run the downloaded file, Winkey.exe, by
clicking on Start, Run, and then clicking on the
Browse button. Navigate to your My Downloads
folder, locate the Winkey.exe file, double-click
on it and click OK. Winkey will install itself
and place an icon in the System try that appears
on the bottom right corner of your screen. Click
on this icon and click on Open Winkey to get
    started.

  • LESSON 195 ZIPIT - FREE COPY BACKUP UTILITY
  • One problem that the computer has is that Windows
doesnt know when a floppy disk is full. One
easy solution is to use a program called
    Zipit.exe. Zipit.exe was written in 1993 as a
    free-ware program. Fortunately, Zipit.exe is
available as a free download at
    http//am.net/lib/TOOLS/Misc/Compress. Download
the program to your Windows folder (C\windows)
and it will be available for you no matter where
    you are in Windows.
  • Zipit works best in a DOS environment. It has a
unique feature called "Hibernate" that will
compress a folder and all of its sub-folders into
one file. The original files are then removed,
making more space available on your hard disk.
The original files and folders can easily be
    restored.
  • By typing Zipit and pressing the Enter key,
you'll see a list of instructinos and switches
that you can add to the command line prompt to
copy files. For example, the command "Zipit
c\mydocu1\. a /s" will copy the folder My
Documents to your A or floppy drive. The /S
switch tells Zipit to include any sub-folders
under it. I used "mydocu1" because DOS can only
recognize the first 8 characters of a file name.
I added the tilde () character and the number 1
after the first 6 characters of the folder My
Documents. Zipit will, with this command, copy
the entire My Documents folder. As a floppy disk
fills up, Zipit will prompt you to remove the
existing floppy disk and insert a fresh one.
  • If you don't assign a name to the new compressed
file that contains the files you copied, Zipit
will assign the name Presto.exe to it. To restore
the file, from the DOS mode, type "Presto /r"
(without the quotes) and press Enter. The /R
switch will restore the files you zipped to their
original locations. Other switches let you
restore to folders or directories other than the
    original.
  • Zipit is a very useful file copy and backup
utility. When you have finished working with
Zipit, type "Exit" (without the quotes) and press
the Enter key to return to Windows.
