The Rainforest

Strata of the Rainforest

• Different animals and plants live in different
  parts of the rainforest.
• Scientists have divided the rainforest into
  strata (zones) based on the how these animals and
  plants live and grow.
• The statas are Emergents, Canopy, Understory and
  Forest Floor.

Emergent

• Is the top of the Rainforest.
• The tallest trees are part of this strata.
• This is where many birds and insects live.
• Kapok Tree is an Emergent Tree.

Canopy

• The upper part of the leafy trees.
• This full foliage is the home of most of the
  tropical animals.
• It includes insects, birds, reptiles, mammals,
  and more.
• Canopy trees grab as much sunlight as possible.

Understory

• This area is under the leaves of the canopy but
  over the ground.
• It is a dark and cool environment.
• This area is dark and very humid.
• Trunks of the canopy trees, shrubs, plants and
  small trees grow here.

Forest Floor

• Underneath all the dense trees and foliage is the
  Forest Floor.
• Very little sunlight reaches this area.
• It is cooler but high very high humidity.
• Insects, fungi and roots all struggle to exist.
