A Major Step in our Journey Deciding to Focus
on Netmeeting
  • After exploring so many different online
programs, we were looking for an application that
was relatively common, cost-free, and had a large
    variety of features. Microsofts Netmeeting
looked like it could meet those basic, beginning
    requirements.

8
What is Netmeeting?
  • Netmeeting is a synchronous online collaboration
and communication program. This means that your
NetMeeting collaboration with others happens in
real time, over the Internet, empowering you
and your students to transcend barriers of
distance. Participants see or hear your comments
when you make them and can respond immediately.

9
Netmeeting Features
PLACE A CALL
  • Online Meetings
  • Once I place a call I can communicate with a
fellow group member in the chat window, on the
    whiteboard, through audio, or through
    videoconferencing.

CHAT
WHITEBOARD
10
Netmeeting Features The Basics
  • The Chat and White Board are basic features that
will help computer users who may be intimidated
by videoconferencing or do not have the camera
equipment. For those who do not have cameras,
Netmeeting is similar to Firetalk and allows
    users to audio conference.

You can send private chat messages.
It is possible to save chats.
11
Netmeeting The Basics
  • The White Board is an excellent way of displaying
and allowing the group to mark up information.

In this example, a MS word chart was imported for
the meeting participants to write their comments
on.
12
Netmeeting Features Program and File Sharing

  • A more advanced feature is allowing other meeting
participants to share a file or even control your
desktop. You always have the options of
sharing or unsharing programs or your
    desktop.

13
Thoughts on Netmeeting Features.
  • We want to get more experience with the file
    sharing features.
  • The issue of IP numbers adds time to setting up
    each meeting.
  • The ILS Directory

14
The People and Places We Saw Along the Way
  • Once we decided to focus on NetMeeting, we
struggled to make connections with each other.
However, through our struggles we were able to
locate and identify a wealth of resources. We
found people who, for a brief moment, joined us
as we tried to climb over a obstacles set before
us. The Internet was also a rich resource with
    its tutorials and online support.

15
Fellow Travelers
  • Rick Banghart
  • Office of Teaching and Technology
  • Helped test video
  • Marcia Witt
  • Programmer at MSUs Virtual University
  • Found contacts for using NetMeeting at home. She
    also wrote the VUs Turtorial
  • Michael Kramizeh
  • Helped test the ease of use for MSUs directory

16
What is an ILS?
  • Problems
  • Still having problems sending/receiving calls
  • You need to refresh to see new people logged on.
  • Benefits
  • Tells you when others are online.
  • You do not have to trade IP addresses.
  • An ILS is an Internet Locator Server
  • What does it do?
  • When you log on you are identified by your email.
  • Your IP is registered.
  • Instead of connecting directly using an IP
address you can just click on the persons name
    in the ILS directory.

One Mans Story
Our group assignment was to find online
collaboration tools that could be used to support
an online learning community
21
NetmeetingUsing it
  • I used NetMeeting with our group on three
    separate occasions
  • Once in our CEP 800 Classroom
  • We used two Pentium Computers with fast ethernet
    connections
  • We tried the Voice over IP, chat, applications
    sharing , and Whiteboard simultaneously
  • We were editing a Microsoft Word document while
drawing. And talking into our microphones

22

The two parties conferencing could
  • Hear each other fine
  • Share Applications
  • Use the whiteboard, all simultaneously
  • No Problems

24
NetmeetingUsing it
I used Netmeeting with our group on three
separate occasions
  • Once at Home talking to someone at school
  • One Pentium Computer with a 56k modem and a dial
up connection connected to a Pentium Computer
    with an Ethernet connection
  • We tried the Voice over IP, chat, applications
    sharing , and Whiteboard simultaneously
  • We were fooling around trying to use the
whiteboard, then chat, and application sharing
    (Microsoft Word, and Powerpoint)

25

One ethernet to one 56k modem
26
This is me using Netmeetingfor the second time,
One ethernet to one 56k modem
  • There was some echo and talkback , but mostly
  • I could hear the other person
  • Application sharing worked most of thetime, but
it was slow and the windows sometimes disappeared
  • The whiteboard worked fine

27
NetmeetingUsing it
The third time using Netmeeting, There were
three of us from class, all Using 56k dial up
connections

30
This is Jasons Final Analysis of Netmeeting
Netmeeting does what it says it does ,given
  • You are connected broadband to broadband , it
    works great!
  • You are connected broadband to 56k, and only two
  • People are in the meeting, it works O.K.
  • You are connected 56k to 56k with more than
  • 2 people, Dont bother !
