Title: Light and Sound Study Guide

1
Light and Sound Study Guide
  • Mrs. Smith
  • 2007

2
Light Vocabulary
  • Reflect- when light bounces off of another thing
  • Refract- when light bends (through water, or a
    prism)
  • Prism- water or a triangular piece of glass used
to refract light. (raindrops are prisms, they
form rainbows if the sun hits them just right.

3
More Light Vocabulary
  • Absorb- when light is taken in and held by
    another object (black shirt)
  • Transparent- an object you can clearly see
    through (window)
  • Translucent- an object you can see through, not
    clearly (fogged up mirror)
  • Opaque- an object you CANNOT see through (a
    concrete wall)

4
Important Information
  • Light travels in waves.
  • Light waves travel very fast.
  • There are several sources of light
  • The sun
  • Flashlights
  • The lights in our classroom
  • And many others

5
Important Information 2
  • Light is made up of colors.
  • For example a green shirt looks green because it
reflects green light and absorbs all other
    colors.
  • A black shirt absorbs all colors, reflecting
    none.
  • A white shirt reflects all colors, reflecting
    white light.
  • You can see the colors of light when it is
    refracted through a prism.

6
Sound Vocabulary
  • Sound- a wave of energy that you can hear
  • Sound wave- a wave that carries sound that can be
    heard
  • Vibrate to move back and forth very quickly
  • Pitch- the highness or lowness of a sound

7
Important Information
  • Sound must have something to carry it (water,
    air, or solids)
  • Sound waves move out in all directions, much like
    a ripple in the water.
  • Sounds are caused by vibrations.
  • Sounds can have different pitches, high or low,
depending on how quickly the vibrating object is
    moving.

8
Important Information 2
  • Sound can be reflected, and when it is reflected
    it is called an echo.
  • Sounds can be made by making objects vibrate like
guitar strings, our vocal chords, or the skin of
a drum. These types of vibrations are made by
plucking, blowing air over or into, or striking.
