Three Little Cajun Pigs by Mike Artell
Readers often need support in recognizing what
good writers do when telling a story. Use picture
books that highlight traits of strong writing to
help students see those traits in other writers
works.
6A Family of Poems My Favorite Poetryfor
Children by Caroline Kennedy, illustrated by Jon
Muth (Zen Shorts)
Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant by Jack Prelutsky
Poetry can be a delight to use with upper
elementary and middle school students. The use of
humorous poems can make the introduction to
poetry enjoyable. Interesting anthologies of
poems make finding good poems easier, especially
when accompanied by great illustrations.

Three Cups of Tea One Man's Mission to Promote
Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg
Mortenson with David Oliver Relin January 2007
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life
Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to
use education to combat terrorism in the
Taliban's backyard.
Anyone who despairs of the individual's power to
change lives has to read the story of Greg
Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following
a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was
inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished
mountain villagers and promised to build them a
school. Over the next decade he built 55 schools
especially for girls that offer a balanced
education in one of the most
isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it
chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought
him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and
uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea
combines adventure with a celebration of the
humanitarian spirit.
11The series of three novels by Suzanne Fisher
Staples
Shabanu Daughter of the Wind (1989) This Newbery
Honor book about a Pakistani girl is a thorny,
poignant coming-of-age'' novel. Staples'
depiction of desert life is breathtaking. She
employs vivid, lyrical metaphors to create the
potency of the family's joys and struggles.''
Ages 12 and up. Haveli (1995) Shabanu, now a
mother at 18, faces daily challenges to her
position in her husband's household, even as she
plans for her young daughter's education and
uncertain future. Then, during a visit to the
haveli, their home in the city of Lahore, Shabanu
falls in love with Omar, in spite of traditions
that forbid their union. The House of Djinn
(2008) It has been ten years since Shabanu staged
her death to secure the safety of her daughter,
Mumtaz, from her husband's murderous brother.
Mumtaz has been raised by her father's family
with the education and security her
mother desired for her, but with little
understanding and love. A commanding sequel
returns to modern-day Pakistan to reexamine the
juxtaposition of traditional Islamic values with
modern ideals of love.
