Title: Different ways of presenting love

1
Hearts and Partners
  • Different ways of presenting love

2
How love is affected by age
  • Love is just starting in I wanna be yours. The
language and style of the poem is lively and
frisky which is similar to a stereotypical modern
young relationship. The love has just started.
  • In One Flesh the poem lacks speed and is more
gentle which reflects the nature of the poem, a
more mature relationship. Tossed up like flotsam
    from a former passion.
  • The male in I wanna be yours is asking the
woman for them to be united in love. He used
phonetic spellings for familiarity to show that
they have something in common. Visual and
    domestically orientated images are more
accommodating showing respect for her, let me
be your rain coat for those frequent rainy days.

Love through the ages
  • The structure of To His Coy Mistress is more
rigid which seems to reflect the views of love
and relationships in pre-1900s. The structure
adds sense as it is rational.
  • The rhythm of Beggar Woman is brisk and up-beat
and the mock heroic couplets show the
light-heartiness that the poem seems to hold.
  • Natural imagery is used, showing the tradition
and the way language is affected by the time
period. Love is presented in a conventional way
which show their strict attitudes towards love
    and relationships.
  • A more modern and up-to-date poem is
Rapunzstiltskin. Feminism shines through, as it
is the woman who is in control of the
relationship. The woman is trying to make it easy
for the man by acting like a T.V. quizmaster
and the man still cannot guess what it is that
    she wants from the relationship.
  • Our Love Now is a modern poem. The poem is
youthful you can see this from the conversation
tone to the poem I said.

Humour
  • King uses comedy to make it light-hearted. This
does not mean that his message is also
light-hearted. On the contrary, he is portraying
a serious message about how we should all take
    responsibility.
  • This jaunty rhythm gives the poem a satirical
    feel.
  • Rapunzstitlskin also focus on humour. Lochhead
    combines two well-known fairy tales.
  • She uses colloquial language to create a feeling
of familiarity with the readers. The audience
feels as though they are aware of the characters
and of the story within the first few lines.
  • In the poem of I Wanna Be Yours there is a frisky
approach to its presentation. He uses universal
metaphors, which everybody can relate to. For
example, he wants to be a electric meter, which
    never runs out.
  • The pop-style lyrics of deep deep deep deep de
deep deep give a lively flow and a playful tone
    to this youthful love.

  • There are various methods used in these poems to
    present the different attitudes.
  • Our Love Now is set out in two distinct columns
that show the conflict of the couple. For every
argument that the man proposes, the woman has a
    counter argument.
  • The Beggar Woman and To His Coy Mistress are
set out in a conventional style. They are set
out in paragraphs which show the developing
arguments or story line of the poem.
  • I wanna be yours has a lack of any punctuation.
This enforces the idea that the man is pouring
out his feelings to her before she interrupts
him. As he calls himself i, he is making
    himself inferior to her love.
  • One flesh has a tighter structure which
reflects the self-contained aspect of the
relationship. It is monotonous in essence.
