Pupils project between THG and Mediegymnasiet
Malmö

Introduction of Mediegymnasiet
  • Hello!
  • Our school Mediegymnasiet is quite a big school
with about 600 students from all over Scania and
even some students from Denmark. There are about
70 teachers and other staff in the school. Its a
pretty big building that we share with another
school (Malmö Högskola). We have our own
    web-radio and web-magazine. We have 6 different
directions to choose from. Radio, Text, Expo,
    Film, Photo, Graphics.
  • Weve got a kiosk called White Shark where
Sebastian always buys mentos. The best thing
about the school is that youve always got access
to computers and that you get quite much freedom
in your projects. In the first ten weeks here at
Mediegymnasiet we tested all profiles so we could
choose the profile we wanted to go to. Now we are
going in this class, and we chose the
text-profile (journalism). Anyway I guess you
dont understand Swedish but you can se our web
magazine and listen to our radio at
    www.mediegymnasiet.net.

The different learning profiles
  • Journalism
  • In journalism we are learning to write articles,
chronicles and interview people. Sometimes we get
sent out on the streets to do interviews. We got
our own web magazine called Attitydwebb
    (http//www.attitydwebb.se) where we post our
different texts for all the world to see. Apart
from this subject we read history, Swedish,
English, maths, media, computer knowledge, and
aesthetic activity. Right now we got a project
which involves all the subjects besides maths,
computer knowledge and aesthetic activity. The
    theme is history.
  • Photography
  • In the study profile photography there are two
directions. One is advertising-fashion and the
other one is report-photo. In advertising-fashion
you learn to compose pictures for an advertising
agency. The pictures can vary from pictures of
food to industrial photos. The report direction
is to work more journalistically but instead of
using words you express yourself in pictures. You
take photos for different magazines, often in the
nature. The photographer can later be employed by
    a daily newspaper.

  • Graphic art
  • In graphic design we are working with designs
for different things, for example CD-cases and
logotypes. You work by hand and by computer. In
this direction you will understand how
communi-cation works. Here you will have the
possibility to expand your knowledge about design
and layouts in websites and material things.
  • In graphic production you learn how to print
different things, like books, posters and
    newspapers.
  • Radio
  • Radio is a very good study profile and our
school has a big studio where you can record on
air live to the whole world over the internet.
At Radio you can become a radio producer or a
    radio host!
  • Around fifteen percent of the students study
radio. That is kind of unique for a school with
600 students. The students at radio have their
own radio channel called ALARM. They send live
through the internet, daily. They talk about
important and unimportant things. They get to
express their opinion and use their own voice and
ideas at the Find your own voice. After youve
studied at our school, you have a full education
in radio, and are able to go out and work at
    once.

6
  • Film/TV.
  • The people in this direction are very creative
and they like to be in the limelight. They get to
do almost everything that has anything to do with
film/TV. In this study profile you can choose if
you want to be in front of the camera or behind
    it.
  • If you want to work as a director its good if
you like technology. You also have to notice very
small details that anyone else may not pay
attention to like that the light is right.
  • The TV-people have got their own studio, and
they all get a chance to make their own movie or
    TV-program.
  • Expo
  • This study profile comprises shops, windows and
    exhibition.
  • Shop communication
  • What does a shop communicator do? Well, they
expose and promote the shop products and makes
sure that there is some kind of relation between
the shopping windows and the store. They are
planning projects and work practically and
creatively on both small and big spaces.
  • Exhibitions
  • If you are interested in furnishing, exhibition,
events, and stage design then this is the study
profile for you and the education will amuse you.
  • The teachers will give you practical
instructions on how to use a room to get
information through color, lightening and shapes.
You will learn to create and adjust atmosphere
    for a special purpose.

7
Thats how we introduced THG to out Swedish
partners
  • Our school has been existing since
  • 1968 and is named after
  • Theodor Heuss.
  • He was the first President of the Federal
Republic of Germany and was born on 31st January
1884 in Brackenheim. He died on 12th December
    1963 in Stuttgart.
  • Today there are about 600 students (aged 10-20)
and 44 teachers at our school. The students are
divided into 9 grades (5th to 13th). Every class
    consists of about 25-30 persons.

8
  • These subjects are taught at our school
  • German, English, French, Latin, Maths
  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History,
    Computer Science, Philosophy, Religious
Education, Social Science, Biology in English
  • Art, Music, Physical Education
  • Radevormwald has got a twin town, Châteaubriant
in France. Every year there is an exchange
between the 9th graders of the schools in both
towns. And since 3 years ago the 10th grade makes
    a skiing-excursion to Obertauern/Austria, so its
our turn in 3 weeks, but at the moment the
weather is bad there, because it is too warm and
    it rains.

9
  • Since August 2001 there has been a special class
for musicians. The new pupils can choose between
a normal class and this special class. There
they learn an instrument at school. After two
years this special class ends. The musicians have
the choice to continue playing this instrument in
the school orchestra or to quit playing.
  • In our school, you also find a cafeteria. The
cafeteria opened on 19th February 2005. The
people who sell the food are parents, who do
voluntary work. You can find a
  • large variety of drinks and food
  • there so every person can find
  • something. The prices are cheap
  • so that you get much for little
  • money.

Some food they sell in the cafeteria
10
  • In our opinion THG is really nice, because there
is a good social climate and all pupils are
friendly. Although the building with its rooms is
not very modern and has to be renewed, all in all
as we have to go to school anyway, we could have
ended up in a worse place than THG.

What our partners told us about Sweden
  • Sweden is located in the north of Europe, in the
eastern part of Scandinavia. In the west Sweden
borders to Norway and in the north-east it
borders to Finland. More than nine million people
are living on Swedens 450 000 km2. The Swedish
capital, also the biggest city, is Stockholm.
Malmö is the third biggest of all the cities.
Since 1st January 1995 Sweden is a member of the
European Union. We celebrate our national day on
6th June. Our national anthem is called Du gamla
    du fria.
  • The Swedish currency is calledsvensk krona or
shortly called SEK. Sweden has been a big export
nation of iron, copper and timber for a long
    time.
  • The highest point in Sweden is on the mountain
Kebenekaise, 2 104 m above the sea. Its located
    in the county called Lappland.

12
The flag
  • The Swedish flag is one of the oldest flags in
the world its over 500 years old.
  • The model probably comes from the Danish flag,
which had the red and white cross flag for a
    really long time.
  • The two colours blue and yellow come from the
colours of the three golden crowns surrounded by
    a blue field.

13
Meet Swedens royal family
The Swedish Royal Family consists of King Carl
XVI Gustaf, who was born in 1946. His wife, our
Queen Silvia, was born in Germany in 1943. Their
first child, Crown Princess Victoria, came in
1977. Then, two years later, our Prince Carl
Philip was born in 1979. Their third and last
child came in 1982 and her name is Princess
Madeleine.
The Swedish monarchy is one of the oldest in the
world. The Swedish monarchy rests on traditions
dating back more than a thousand years. Victoria
Ingrid Alice Désirée, Crown Princess of Sweden,
Duchess of Västergötland, is the oldest child of
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and was
born on 14th July 1977. The Crown Princess will
be Sweden's first female Head of State from the
Bernadotte Dynasty.
14
The elks
One of Swedens most fascinating animals is an
elk. It is not only we Swedes who are impressed
by these proud animals but tourists love them as
well. One of the most popular signs on the roads
is the warnings sign for elks. These signs are so
popular amongst tourists that they literally took
down the signs and brought them home. This was a
problem so Sweden started to sell things with the
picture of an elk sign at stores, so that the
tourists stopped stealing them. Things like cups,
pillows, posters and so on are sold everywhere.
Elks are the kings of the forest. They all look
different from one and other. They can be short,
tall, skinny, fat, white, brown, and grey. They
can have beard, and some of the elks havent even
got elk antlers. And we here in Sweden have got
around 300.000 elks everywhere in Sweden except
on our island Gotland.
15
Malmö
Malmö is affected by a lot of crimes. There are
some places that are more dangerous than others.
One of them is called Rosengård, and is more or
less a suburb that many fear to visit. One
positive thing with the place is that Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, our handsome football player, got
his own football ground there. Weve also got
several adults walking around the city by night
to prevent violence and drugs among teens.
Now to a whole different side of Malmö shopping.
When it comes to shopping, Malmö has a lot to
offer. We have seven big malls and some smaller
ones where you can find EVERYTHING! Weve got a
long street with stores that are called
Gågatan, which means walking street. Its very
cozy when the summer sets in. In one of our
squares there are vegetables, flowers and
fruits-markets. In these market stalls, its
often cheaper than the ordinary supermarket.
Beside this there are two big festivals were you
cannot only shop, but listen to concerts and
experience culture from all over the world.
16
And heres what we told our Swedish partners
about our region
  • Radevormwald is a municipality in the
    Oberbergischer Kreis, in North-Rhine-Westphalia,
Germany. It is one of the oldest towns in the
    Bergisch Land.
  • Origin of the name
  • Radevormwald means "clearing in front of the
    wood".
  • In the 15th century the town prospered. Walls,
towers and gates protected the settled trades of
the smiths, wool weavers and garment makers.
  • In the 16th century there were two big town
fires. The first took place on 17th July 1525.
The second devastated the town in 1571.
  • On 1st July 1900 the second youth hostel in the
    world celebrated its inauguration.
  • In the 20th century Radevormwald developed into
an industrial location. Local businesses included
lock-, file-, bicycle-, paper-, ice-skate- and
building component factories, motor and textile
    industries, yarn-spinning and cloth mills.
  • At 815 in the morning of 26th May 1928 a
Lufthansa Junkers F13 airplane crashed in
Hahnenberg on the Schlegel meadow (Schlegelsche
    Wiese), killing three people.
  • On the evening of 27th May 1971, a Deutsche
Bundesbahn railbus ran as a special service on
the WuppertalRadevormwald line. The train was
full of schoolchildren on a school outing and was
about 30 minutes behind schedule. An oncoming
freight train failed to stop for reasons unclear,
and collided with the railbus. 46 passengers died
    in the accident,
  • including 41 schoolchildren.
  • This accident was the worst rail disaster in
    West Germany .
  • Rades coat of arms was granted on 7th November
    1934. It
  • consists of a lion grasping a key.

17
The market square
  • Today Radevormwald is characterised by its small
and medium-sized businesses, predominantly in the
service industries. This leaves scope for the
exploitation of resources for leisure and the
enjoyment of nature, and gives the town a
    relatively high quality of life.
  • Older historical buildings, as in many other
places in the Bergisch Land, have not survived.
An exception is the historical garden house in
the town park which survived the last big town
    fire in the year 1802.

Man-made lakes
  • Close to Radevormwald there are many
man-made-lakes because we live in a mountainous
area and therefore it is an interesting topic.
  • Retaining walls and barrages are named as
man-made-lakes in which water is stored. The
lakes are filled up when the snow melts or when
it rains. The water can possibly be used to
produce energy, if more electricity is necessary.
  • Water is the most valuable form of energy, which
    is renewed every year.
  • Each man-made-lake consists of a water
abstraction system, a dewatering conduit as a
safety arrangement and an overflow spillway and a
    control module.
  • Actually every man-made-lake is the same but
    they have different functions.

19
Bevertalsperre
  • The man-made-lake named Bever was built between
1896 and 1898. You can find the Bever in
Hückeswagen, which is close to Radevormwald.
  • The man-made-lake Bever is used for flood
control, but in the summer there is a large place
to relax and have fun in the water.
  • After its official opening on 8th October 1898
the man-made-lake Bever had a capacity of 3.3
    millions of m³ of water.
  • But later in 1938 it was enlarged. So nowadays
it catches 23.7 millions m³ of water.

Weather and Hills
  • The weather in Radevormwald changes a lot. At
one moment the weather is okay and a moment later
its very bad.Radevormwald is situated about 400
m above sea level and so its possible that it
snows. But if it snows, it melts very fast and
after one day there is only mud. And because of
the height its always cold. It mostly rains.
Well, there are almost no moments when it doesnt
rain, but when there is one of these moments when
    it doesnt rain its cloudy.
  • Actually we do get some sunny days in the summer
we do not want to make it sound too negative.
-)You see the weather isnt that great, but
theres nothing you can do about it. To control
the weather, there are many weather stations in
the Bergisch Land. Our region the Bergisch
Land (mountainous country) has its name from
Graf von Berg (Graf is similar to earl). Its
landscape is very hilly, so, many people think,
that the name Bergisch Land comes from the
mountainous landscape as the German word for
    mountain is Berg.

21
Sports in Radevormwald
  • There is high variety of sports clubs in our
    town.
  • One fifth of the population of Radevormwald is
member of one of the twenty clubs.
  • The two most popular sports clubs are the
handball club HSG Radevormwald/Herbeck and the
    soccer club Spvg. Radevormwald.
  • Except for these, there is also a swimming and
rescue club DLRG which is organised in the Red
Cross. In summer they keep an eye on swimmers in
    the barrages in our area.
  • Radevormwald also has a gliding airfield. It is
mostly used on weekends by the gliding clubs of
our area. Its runway is 680m meters long.

22
  • At wintertime there is a cross-country ski run
in Önkfeld, which is a little district of
Radevormwald. But it doesnt open every winter
because sometimes we havent got enough snow for
cross-country skiing. The slope, which is about 9
kilometres long, is groomed by machines.
  • For the indoor-sports like handball, basketball,
hockey or indoor soccer there are two big gyms
right next to our school and some smaller gyms
all over our town. The soccer club and the
athletics club of TSV Radevormwald have got one
stadium for their challenges and next to it there
is a smaller pitch for practising and for hobby
athletes. All in all many people in our area are
active in sports and they play an important role
in the life of most teenagers.

Interview with Mario Busch son of a farmer in
Radevormwald and our classmate ? Lena Mario,
your family owns a farm, which is focussed on
cow breeding and the production of their milk.
How many cows do you have? Mario We have 120
dairy cows, 5 bulls and a lot of offspring. So
all in all there are approximately 240
individuals of cattle. Lena How many hectares do
you cultivate and is this the average of
landholding for farmers in Radevormwald and
area? Mario We cultivate 140 hectares and no, we
cultivate more land and we keep more cows than
most other farmers in the area. Lena Do you also
grow grains or is the land only for the cows to
feed on? Mario Yes, we do. We grow 25 hectares
of sweet corn (for the cows) and 10 hectares of
trikale (mixture of wheat and barley). Lena Radev
ormwald is placed in the Bergisch Land
(countryside with many hills). Are there any
complications with the agriculture because of
the landscape? Mario Yes, because of the climate
the sweet corn and the grains do not grow so
fast and well. In a landscape where it is flat,
it is also warmer and it does not rain so often.
Exactly this is what grains and sweet corn need.
Lena Thanks for the interview. Mario No
problem.
This is Mario at a country-party His outfit is a
little bit exaggerated!! In general he looks
like a normal guy-but he has got more muscles
than anybody else.

Drug abuse and drug problems in Radevormwald
  • Drug abuse is a big problem in Radevormwald. The
number of persons, who are doing drugs, has
increased in the last twenty years. And sadly the
people who begin to do drugs, are much younger
    than they were before.
  • Mostly people who are members of gangs or
groups, do drugs. It is as if they were under
    peer pressure.Reasons
  • In Radevormwald drugs became a big problem
because there are not so many free time activity
opportunities for young people and no drug
prevention lessons. The police are also not very
active in working against the drug abuse.
  • Help for people who do drugs
  • In our town there are organisations like the
blue-cross (Blaues Kreuz). Here mostly alcoholics
will get medicated until they are clean. But
unfortunately in many cases the patients slide
    back.
