Title: IPv6: The Next Generation of the Internet

1
IPv6 The Next Generation of the Internet
  • 1/c Gokay Huz 1/c Franklin Morrison
  • Project Advisors LCDR Staier LT Nasitka
  • Sponsor TISCOM

2
Presentation Outline
  • Background on Internet Protocol (IP)
  • Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)
  • IPv6 Project

3
Internet Protocol
  • IP is a international standard
  • defines how data is sent from one device to
    another over the Internet
  • IPv4 has been used for 20 years
  • It is now indispensable

4
Current Limitations
  • Many existing issues with IPv4
  • A lack of adequate address space to meet growing
    demand
  • Address-conservation techniques causing a lack of
    end-to-end connectivity between computers and
    other devices
  • The need to support new network services that did
not exist when IPv4 was developed

5
Registered IPv4 Address Allocation History
6
Creating More Addresses
  • NAT allows many private addresses with one global
    address
  • Each packet is translated
  • Created end-to-end connection issues
  • If NAT fails, then all devices lose connectively

7
New Services Demanded
  • IPsec
  • IPv4 packets are sent in the clear
  • Provides authentication
  • Quality of Service
  • Allows confirmation of receipt
  • Gives priority to certain packets
  • Widespread use of NAT hurts use

8
The Solution
  • IPv6 is an evolutionary but important improvement
    over IPv4
  • Positions the Internet for future growth
  • Supports end-to-end connectivity
  • Promotes trustworthy networking
  • IPv6 permits easier networking

9
Triggers for IPv6
  • IPv4 address space exhaustion in general
  • NAT use hampers growth of applications
  • Need for uniformity over add-on protocols (QoS,
    IPsec, etc)
  • DoD Mandate by 2008

10
Project Objectives
  • Learn how IP networks and IPv6 operate
  • Do interoperability testing
  • Research the transition from IPv4 to IPv6

11
Technical Approach
  • Implement and test the Test Bed Network
  • Research Deployment
  • Tunneling
  • Dual Stack works best

12
Network Diagram
DNS
13
Results
  • IPv6 works
  • A long transition period
  • No immediate need to implement IPv6
  • CG has a working IPv4 infrastructure
  • In the future, IPv6-applications and DoDs usage
    will drive migration
  • SIPRNET communications on Deepwater

14
Conclusions
  • Summary
  • IPv6 has useful features
  • No need to implement now
  • Buy IPv6-compatible hardware and software

15
Restoring End-to-End
  • Restores the Promise of Online Collaboration
  • IP Telephony
  • IP Video Conferencing

16
Built-in Protocols
  • IPsec - packet encryption and source
    authentications
  • QoS Allows priority of certain information
    streams and receipts
  • Auto-configuration plug and play
