WHAT IS RAPE?
  • Rape is when a man or women, boy or girl has
    sexual intercourse with someone that is against
    one of the persons will.

STATISTICS
  • An estimated 683,000 adult women are raped each
    year.
  • Every minute in the U.S., there are 1.3 forcible
    rapes of adult women.
  • 78 women are raped each hour.
  • Up to 85 of rapes go unreported.
  • 29 of all forcible rapes in America occurred
    when the victim was less than 11-years-old.
  • 61 of all rapes occurred before the victim
    reached 18.
  • Approximately 75 of rapes are committed by
    someone the victim knows.

MORE STATISTICS
  • Of the cases of forcible rape reported in 1993,
    only 53 led to the arrest of the alleged
    perpetrator.
  • There were approximately 30,000 sexual assaults
    of males, ages 12 and over, in the U.S. in 1993.
  • 98 of rapists are men.  66 of rapists are
    White, 30 are Black and 4 are other races.
  • The rate of recidivism among recently released
    sex offenders from a psychiatric prison was
    approximately 76.
  • The average sentence for a rapist is 17 years in
    prison, the actual time served is approximately 8
    years.
  • Out of 1.8 million severe assaults against women
    in 1991, 45,000 of them were marital rapes.

IMPACT
  • Family will be frightened that it might happen
    again.
  • No matter what you will have to live with it, you
    will feel like you had done something wrong
  • Might not want to be around people as much.
  • Scared to go places alone.
  • Scared to be alone

PREVENTION IDEAS
  • Dont go out to places at night or day alone.
  • Lock all doors and windows inside your home.
  • Try and be with groups of people as much as
    possible.
  • Be in public places that have a lot of people.
  • (Malls, Movies and other large environments)

What rapist look for . . . .
  • Hair style ponytail, bun, braid, or other hair
    style easily to be grabbed.
  • Women with long hair.(Short hair is not common.)
  • Clothing. (That looks easy to take off. Some
    rapist carry scissors with them.)
  • Women on cell phones or something that makes them
    busy when they are walking, then the rapist can
    catch them off guard and overpower the women.
  • Time of day. ( More likely to be in the morning
    between 500 and 830 am.)
  • Places most likely to be attacked Grocery store
    parking lots, business parking lots/ garages, and
    public restrooms.
