5Objective of the ION CRAFT Project
- The aim of the ION project is to improve the
efficiency of drug screening for a specific set
of neuronal cell targets. - These targets are ion channels involved in
important neurological and psychiatric disorders. - The objective will be approached by
- increasing the efficiency of sequential screening
by improvingboth the experimental platform and
the management of the experimental data - producing intelligent software agents capable of
an adaptive planning of the experiments - validating the results by predictive animal
models.
6ION Project Components
- The ION Project focuses on five main components
- An annotated library covering a large number of
ion channel targets and a design of chemical
structures in relation to the most important ion
channel targets - IONEP experimental platform
- Experiment Evaluator and Planner (AI Software)
- In Vivo Validation
- IONEP Integrated Pilot.

8ION Workplan
- The ION workplan is characterized by a focused
research and development approach. -
- The main activity subjects are
- Research on ion channels focused on molecular
targets suitable for drug screening - Design of chemical structures in relation to the
identified ion channel targets - Development of IONEP experimental platform
- Development of an Experiments Planner
- All the developed components will be integrated
in the IONEP pilot.

17Project Work Organization
- The ION Project organizes the work by
workpackages. - A workpackage is a coordinated and consistent
cluster of activities to be executed in a given
time period. - In ION the single activity are called tasks.
- The entire project has been subdivided into 8
workpackages and 44 tasks.

29Project Management Responsibility
- The Overall Project Management will be the
responsibility of the NWP, the ION Project
Coordinator. -
- NWP, as Project Manager, will put the necessary
procedures to execute and control in place, and
together with the partners will operate these
procedures. - This is necessary to ensure that the project is
managed effectively at all times. -
- The position of the Project Manager has been
assigned to NWP which has appointed Mrs. Carla
Caccia.
30ION Quality Review Committee (QRC)
- The Quality Review Committee members are
- Ruggero Fariello (NWP SMEs Representative
Chairman) - Miklós Antal (UD RTDs Representative RTD)
- Gian Giacomo Consalez (Member External to the
Project)
31Project Scientific Leader
- The Project Scientific Leader is the person
within the Consortium who has an overall
understanding and vision of the scientific
aspects of the project. - The primary responsibility of the Project
Scientific Leader will be to assure that
different workpackages and tasks are
complementary and that technical interfaces are
in accordance with the workpackage
specifications. -
- The Project Scientific Leader will be
responsible for solving inconsistencies or issues
affecting more than one workpackage and for
authorising changes to the original
specifications and procedures in compliance with
the PMD Change Control Procedure. -
- The position of the Project Scientific Leader
has been assigned to the ION co-ordinator NWP who
has appointed Mrs. Patricia Salvati.
32Workpackage Management
- Each workpackage will be managed as a
sub-project. - The workpackage leader will be put in charge as
coordinator of all activities within a specific
workpackage. The project manager will be
responsible for coordinating workpackage progress
and for collecting the progress information into
a monthly project progress report for the Project
Steering Committee. -
- The workpackage leader will be responsible for
ensuring that the deliverables from its
workpackage are available accordingly with the
global project workplan and for achieving the
necessary levels of quality.
33Project Communication
- ION pull together a transnational group of
partners doing quite different activities in
still far apart working contexts - Effective communication is an essential
capability required all time during the project
execution - ION addresses the issue by establishing two
communication platforms - A project intranet supporting a state of the art
collaborative workspace for the internal project
requirements - A web site for dissemination of project results
and mediaaccess.
