Unit 6b Why have people invaded and settled in
Britain in the past?
How was the grave at Sutton Hoo
discovered? Sutton Hoo is the name of a hillside
in Sussex where there were several ancient burial
mounds. In 1939 the owner of the land, Mrs.
Pretty, asked some archaeologists to dig up one
of the mounds. Other mounds had been dug up
before, but nothing interesting had been
found. This was because the things in the other
mounds had been stolen long ago. But this mound
had not had anything stolen from it. It was full
of interesting artefacts. However, there was no
body in the grave, not even a skeleton. Only the
objects in the grave could provide clues to who
was buried there.

Britain in the past?
What was in the grave? The earth in the grave
was in an unusual shape, as if something had been
lying there and made a mark. Can you guess what
it might have been? Here is a clue It was
a ship! The wooden ship had rotted away, but the
mark it made in the earth could still be seen.

Unit 6b Why have people invaded and settled in
Britain in the past?
Rich and powerful people were often buried in
their ships, along with all their
belongings. What does this tell us about the
person who was buried at Sutton Hoo? Think about
the artefacts that were found in the grave. Do
they give us any clues about the person who was
buried there? What sort of things is it
impossible to find out from the grave?
