1
Everybody Loves Ray Diagrams (II)
2
Ray Diagrams for Convex Mirrors!
  • The concept isvery similar toconcave mirrors.
  • You still have a(C), (f), and anobject, though
the center of curvature (C) and the focal point
    (f) are located on the side of the mirror
opposite the object behind the mirror.

3
Reflect on This!
  • After reflection, the reflected rays diverge
they will never intersect on the object side of
    the mirror.
  • For this reason, like plane mirrors, convex
mirrors produce only virtual images which are
    located somewhere behind the mirror.

4
The New Rules
  • Any incident ray traveling parallel to the
principal axis on the way to a convex mirror will
reflect so that its extension will pass through
    the focal point.
  • Any incident ray traveling towards a convex
mirror so that its extension passes through the
focal point will reflect and travel parallel to
    the principal axis.

5
The Full Picture!
6
Extension? HUH?
  • Okay, rememberwere talking about VIRTUAL images
now, so were going to draw lines AS IF the
    rays went behind the mirror.

7
Convex Ray Diagrams
  • Pick a point on the top of the object and draw
two incident rays traveling towards the mirror.
  • Draw one ray so it travels towards the focal
point on the opposite side of the mirror stop
the ray at the point of incidence with the
    mirror.
  • Draw the second ray so it travels exactly
    parallel to the principal axis.

8
The Idea is the Same!
  • The ray that travels towards the focal point will
reflect and travel parallel to the principal
    axis.
  • The ray which traveled parallel to the principal
axis on the way to the mirror will reflect and
travel in a direction such that its extension
    passes through the focal point.

9
Eyes on the Prize!
  • Locate the Image as before!
