Does this apply to my laptop?
  • Yes
  • Any laptop from any fund source

    subject to all UT System regulations

What is encryption?
  • Definition encryption is the process of
    obscuring information to make it unreadable
    without special knowledge.
  • UT System contract for Safeboot
  • Whole Disk encryption will be deployed
  • How/When/Who will this be done?
  • Will I need a password?
  • What else can Safeboot do?

What is a cable lock?
  • Physical lock with cable which attaches to your
    laptop and then to a stationary object.
  • Easily to overcome for most thieves
  • Designed to be an extra level of defense
  • Defense in Depth solution
  • IT Services will supply the locks. We have
    master keys for them.
  • When do I use the lock?

Laptop User Agreement
  • Each school has their own agreement
  • SPH agreements only covers laptop usage
  • Simply covers the new policy framework
  • (Review the agreement)
  • Agreements will be kept on file in IT Services

What about my personal laptop?
  • Personal laptops, and for that matter home
    computers, must conform to UTHSC policy when
    connecting to our network.
  • UTHSC will not provide licensing for encryption
    software for personal laptops at this time.
  • A new website being developed will provide
    guidance on how to comply with these security
    requirements.

How can XFiles help?
  • The use of XFiles will eliminate the need to
    comply with policy.
  • It can assist the user in recovery of data if the
    laptop is ever stolen
  • Great place for backup of important data
  • Provides peace of mind
