    interactive session and make observations.

7
The Observations made ThrissurOllur Hatchery
  • The process of scientific hatching.
  • The cost involved.
  • The risks involved.
  • The procurement of quality eggs.
  • The different problems faced during the
    process.

8
The Observations made- ThrissurLayer bird farm,
Kodassery
  • The basic set up of a layer bird farm.
  • The way our Kudumbashree unit had taken it up.
  • The basic cost involved.
  • The problems faced by them, mainly to find a
    ready market.

9
The Observations made- ThrissurDiscussions with
the DMC
  • The discussion was quite fruitful as the DMC
being very interested in the project had already
talked it to the dept. of vet. Sciences, and
procured permission to take up the premises of
idle veterinary hospitals and clinics in the
    districts for the purpose.

10
The Observations made- Malappuram
  • Mr. Abdul Kadar was quite informative about the
poultry business, as his unit had a capacity of
    hatching 1,12,000 eggs per month.
  • The visit to his hatchery and farm gave an idea
about how to carry out the process.
  • The discussions with him proved to be fruitful as
he is willing to integrate with Kudumbashree at
    any scale.

11
The Observations made- Malappuram
  • The discussion with the DMC was quite effective
as he had already made some arrangements for the
sites required for setting up the farms.

12
The Observations made- Kasargode
  • The visit to the existing Nutrimix units proved
    quite enlightening.
  • The units were performing fairly well even though
the rainy season posed a lot of problems.
  • The unit at Bedadka which had just completed over
one and a half years in operation had already
    completed its repayments.

13
The Observations made - Kasargode
  • The visit to CPCRI was also quite informative.
  • The official Dr. Nilofer, promised that they will
arrange all the necessary training for the
    purpose.
  • She also promised to get back with a list of
possible supplements to the ingredients, which we
    can use for cost effectiveness.

14
The Observations made- Kozhikkode KASS
  • The teams services are of a great help to the
Kudumbashree network as they get a good
    professional support at affordable rates.
  • The team is engaged with the districts work for
about six months, which suggests a good
possibility of replicating them region wise.
  • If the team can procure private works also, e
could easily think of one team per district, but
of course that's only a future prospect.

15
The Observations made- Kozhikkode Ek-Saath
  • The teams enthusiasm is quite notable.
  • The presence of such a group of trained PGs with
in the Kudumbashree network will be of a great
    help to conduct training programmes.
  • The main benefit is that we can design custom
made training programmes as per our requirement.
  • At least one such team per region will be
required for our immense training needs.

16
Further Action taken
  • Layer bird farm project formulated and circulated
to the initial 5 districts of pilot phase.
    Eranakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and
    Kozhikkode.
  • A decision was taken to scale up the pilot phase
    to 7 districts.
  • The pilot phase involves setting up of 5 units
    per districts in the phase.
  • The DMTs have already been asked to identify the
possible sites and groups for the project.

17
Further Action taken
  • Broiler farm project formulated and circulated to
the first 5 districts in the pilot phase.
  • Arrangements are being made to complete the
agreement formalities with Mr. Abdul Kadar for
    the purpose.

18
Further Action taken
  • The project of Nutrimix is being studied for
    possible improvements.
  • The idea is to set up a milling facility in each
district to support the Nutrimix units in that
    district.
  • The response from CPCRI is also awaited for
    considering cost revision strategy.

19
Immediate priorities
  • To identify the units for poultry and send them
    for training.
  • To identify the sites and ensure infrastructural
    support.
  • To make the units operational by the last week
    of November 2005.
  • To identify potential groups and milling sites
    for Nutrimix units also.
