Who am I?
  • David Mackie Solutions Architect Synergistic
    Network Solutions Pty Ltd
  • This years focus
  • Build Windows Server User Community in the ACT
  • Help build other communities
  • SharePoint
  • .Net
  • SQL Server

3
My vision for the User Group
  • Provide a place where you can
  • Get your brain away from the command prompt and
    learn something different
  • Network with like minded people
  • Get professional feedback from your peers
  • Benchmarking reality with others with the same
    issues.
  • Learn about topics or issues from others you may
not normally come across or have time to
    investigate yourself
  • Learn about new contacts or vendors you may not
    have come across.

4
What would I like to happen at the monthly
meeting?
  • Round Table Discussion about Windows related
    technologies
  • Presentations and Discussions on technical
    developments and resources
  • Presentations on new products and technologies
  • Sharing ideas and problem solving
  • Pizza and Drinks
  • Sometimes even Lucky Door Prizes

5
Think about these questions, I might ask you soon.
  • What single thing can I do to make this group a
compelling priority for you to come to once a
    month?
  • Please say Pizza thats a given
  • What do you want to know about Windows Server
Infrastructure that you dont know now?
  • Would you be willing to share your expertise with
    the group?
  • What are you good at? Are there Synergys with
    other group members?

Windows 2003 R2 Solutions Distributed file system
  • Scenarios
  • Publication from hub to branches
  • Data collection from branch to hub
  • Roaming user documents
  • Provides uniform namespace across multiple file
    servers
  • Efficient over a WAN
  • Highly available
  • Management through MMC and MOM

DFS Efficiency
  • Remote Differential Compression (RDC)
  • Delta compression
  • Dictionary compression (like Winzip/GZip)
  • Cross-File RDC enabled by Windows Server 2003 R2
    Enterprise Edition
  • Bandwidth management
  • Scheduling with 15-minute granularity
  • Clients automatically use closest server
  • Control branch-to-branch failover

11
DFS Availability
  • Hierarchical failover and failback
  • Branch users are able to access files when WAN is
    down
  • Configuration information stored in Active
    Directory for high availability
  • Self-healing
  • Compatible with Shadow Copies for Shared Folders

12
Enabling TechnologyRemote Differential
Compression (RDC)
  • Only send minimal deltas when transferring data
    over a network
  • No local change tracking required
  • Can use similar files for seeding
  • RDC efficiency examples
  • Change title in a 3.5-MB PowerPoint file, re-sync
    takes just 16 K

DFS ConfigurationDFS Namespaces
  • All servers must be running Windows Server 2003
    SP1
  • Management Servers must run R2
  • All DCs must run Windows Server 2003 with SP1
  • Namespaces must be created on NTFS volumes
  • All clients that support namespaces work

15
DFS ConfigurationDFSR
  • Extend Active Directory schema
  • Windows Server 2003 R2 required
  • Install DFS Replication Service on each server
that will take part in replication
  • Install the DFS Management snap-in on one server
  • Servers in a replication group must be in the
    same forest
  • Replicated folders must be stored on NTFS
    volumes.
  • NOTE DFS-R is not for SYSVOL do not disable
    FRS for DCs.

16
DFS Configuration DFSR
  • Prestage content if necessary!
  • Make a Replication group
  • Add members
  • Apply Schedule/Bandwidth controls
  • Choose folders
  • Apply filters
  • Publish to DFS Namespace (if exists)
