Title: ArcView GIS
1ArcView GIS
Cognitive Science 6-8
I
Arc View GIS can be used to build on a students
prior knowledge about maps as a representation of
the real world.
Students can start from a very basic use of the
mapping software, and build knew knowledge by
manipulating databases within the GIS
GIS allows students to apply mapping concepts to
a visual and kinesthetic reality that can
reinforce the students retention in long term
memory.
2Arc View GIS
Concrete Operational Stage/ Formal Operational
Stages
Students in the middle school age group are
capable of discerning differences and
similarities in classifying information. These
skills can be used when manipulating information
within the GIS system.
Students are beginning to develop formal
operations. GIS allows students to develop their
own line of inquiry. Inferences and hypotheses
can be made and tested within the application.

NET-S Standards
Standard 3 Students use productivity tools to
collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced
models of real world data.
Standard 4 Students communicate their findings
with their peers, their teachers, and their
community
Standard 5 Students choose a question to
research. Databases are accessed and displayed.
Students process the data and report their
findings.
Standard 6 Students use GIS to solve problems in
the real world. Schools have used GIS to develop
proposals for dealing with environmental issues,
planning bus routes and many solving many other
spatially related issues.
