Title: Telescopes

1
Telescopes
  • Chapter 5 The Tools of Astronomy

2
Telescope
  • Tele distant, far
  • Scope- see
  • Invented in the 16th century
  • First used by Galileo Who found moons around
    Jupiter
  • Optical telescopes collect light
  • Two types
  • Refracting
  • Reflecting

3
Refracting Telescopes
  • Use lenses to bend light
  • Larger lenses can gather more light
  • So get better picture
  • Largest is 40 inches across
  • Larger are not possible because the lenses
    distort the light.

4
Yerkes Observatory

6
Reflecting Telescopes
  • Use mirrors to collect light
  • First made by Newton
  • Mirrors can be larger
  • Largest is 200 in. at Mount Palomar near San
    Diego

8
  • Put telescopes in domes with doors that slide
    open
  • Allow them to rotate and elevate
  • Point at the same point in the sky as the earth
    turns.

9
Multiple Mirror Telescopes
  • Large mirrors are hard to make.
  • Use several small mirrors that act together
  • Gather more light than a single mirror

10
Keck Observatory
  • 36 mirror hexagon segments- computer controlled
  • Largest optical telescope

11
The whole spectrum
  • Light is a small part of the electromagnetic
    spectrum
  • There are telescopes that detect other types of
    waves.
  • Radio telescopes- detect radio waves
  • Many stars give off mainly radio waves
  • Use computers to create an image from the waves.
  • Can use several together for even better images

12
Radio Telescopes
13
Arecibo
14
Infrared telecopes
  • Infrared is heat energy (warming lamps)
  • Dont travel through atmosphere
  • Put telescope on a satellite
  • IRAS Infrared Astronomy Satellite (1983)
  • ISO Infrared Space Observatory (1995)
  • Give us images of thingsthat give off little
    energy,like new stars and nebula

16
Ultraviolet telescopes
  • Also need to be on satellites
  • Used to view our sun
  • Also found on the Hubble Space Telescope

17
X-ray telescopes
  • Also need to be on telescopes
  • Give information on life cycles of stars.
  • Uhuru 1970
  • Chandra currently in
  • service

18
Hubble Space Telescope
  • Combination of telescopes optical and
    ultraviolet
  • Has been repaired and upgraded twice
  • Giving scientists views of the universe they have
    never had before
