5Who is a Mentor
- A mentor is someone who can help open doors for
you - Someone who will take a personal and professional
interest in your development and success. - A mentor will help you do something that you
might have trouble doing on your own.
6Benefits of Having a Mentor.
- Teaches, advises, coaches, encourages and
motivates. - Serves as a sounding board for ideas.
- Provides information that can help with career
decisions. - Provides guidance and counseling
- Introduces you to people who may help you succeed
in your career.

- General Information
- Office of Student Success and Mentor Program
- This area offers a wide variety of academic
support services and enrichment activities that
will help students to achieve their academic
goals and career objectives. - The office promotes a caring and nurturing
environment that allows students to discuss their
academic and personal concerns with a friendly
and supportive staff. - The Office of student Success also oversees the
Early Warning System (EWS) , schedules Classroom
Visitations, supervises the Mentor Program,
Tutorial Program, College Success Skill Workshops
and the Peer Mentoring Club.

Student Success that provides students wit
guidance and support from mentors who are
committed to their academic and personal success - Benefits of the Mentor Program

- Familiarize students with college resources and
services - Facilitate interaction between students, faculty
and staff. - Provide a positive support system for students.
- Help students develop a positive identification
with the college - Assist students develop the skills necessary for
academic success. - Help students Navigate the college system
successfully

Program Overview
- Our goal is to assist students to be successful
and to monitor their progress to graduation or
program completion. The Program provides the
following services - Educational planning
- Monitoring academic progress
- Tutorial services
- College Success Skills workshops
- Academic advising
- Scholarship information
- Visits to regional universities

Support Services
- Educational planning- a roadmap for students
entire program of study based on your major. - Monitoring academic progress- Students will be
required to visit their teachers during office
hours, to check on their academic progress within
each course. - Tutorial services- based on the students need,
we will provide free one-to-one tutoring for
2-hours each week for 10 weeks - Mentoring - Matching of Mentors and Mentees.
Mentors are faculty, staff and administrators.
Who will take a personal interest in your
Academic, Social and professional development.

Support Services Outline Contd
- College Success Skills workshops- Workshops are
short seminars that provide academic and personal
skills for success. Workshops will include
topics such as Math Phobia, Test Taking, Time
Management, Financial Aid and much more! - Academic advising- recommend services that will
emphasize and develop positive attitudes for
students to counteract any weakness that may
cause that student to be at-risk. We will also
help students choose their classes and register. - Scholarship information- We will refer students
to a wealth of scholarship resources that will
help them financially. - Visits to regional universities- From time to
time we are invited by several universities to
visit their campuses and meet their Admissions,
Fin. Aid, Faculty, Staff and Students. Some of
these institutions includes University of
Florida, Florida Memorial College, FIU, FAU,
Nova, etc.

Program Criteria
- Students are required to
- Enroll as a student on the South Campus.
- Attend the New Student Orientation.
- Attend a Luncheon to meet your Mentor.
- Attend Program Recognition Luncheon
- Visiting your mentor once every 2 weeks for each
semester - Attend two college success workshops
- Meet with the Student Success Staff for
Educational Planning. - Attend at least one University Trip (optional)
- Visit your instructor to obtain an update of your
academic progress.
13Peer Mentor CLUB
- Philosophy Each one help one, help a fellow
student as you climb. Make a friend be a Peer
Mentor - Peer Mentors are fellow students who have
learned how to be a successful student, have
responsibilities but take time out of their busy
schedule to help other students achieve their
academic goals - Peer Mentoring Relationship
- Match 2nd year students/senior students with
incoming students in a one-on-one relationship or
(students in academic problems)

Community Colleges - Positive
- 81 of students who enroll in an extended
orientation (Student Success Program) passed
their first term college preparatory courses
(Nelson, 1993) - 73 of students who participate in a support
program continue to college level courses. - Broward Community College Enrollment Management
Report 2000-1 - Negative
- 74- 76 of students that are in the processes of
completing preparatory course drop out of the
college. It is sated that the main reason
students leave is because they feel they do not
fit in socially, academically or economically. - We are an early intervention support service
that is committed to helping you stay in school,
and to provide the tools you will need for
successfully completing your goals.
