Title: ANXIETY, EMOTIONAL CONTROL
1ANXIETY, EMOTIONAL CONTROL PERFORMANCE
2Anxiety is a natural part of performing
3It isnt the butterflies that cause you problems,
its the negative thoughts you attach to them
that hurt your performance
4When you get anxious or excited your heart beats
faster, you breathe faster and your muscles
tense. You may perspire, or even feel
light-headed and shaky.
5These feelings wont ruin your performance, but
if you worry about them enough, your worries will
join the physical changes to ruin your
performance. This is more likely to happen when
you lack confidence.
6Athletes and coaches call this choking
7Failure like this is usually a vicious cycle
8Your physical anxiety triggers negative thoughts,
which leads to more physical anxiety. These
distractions keep you from organizing your
thoughts and suddenly you cant solve simple
problems, or keep your eye on the ball.
9Instead of attending to the task, you concentrate
on the negatives and go into some kind of
free-fall
10To prevent choking, you have to keep this
negative feedback loop from getting started in
the first place.CENTERING
11Breathing breaks the downward cycle. You need to
quickly re-direct your attention to the task at
hand.
