Title: Inclusion by Design

1
Inclusion by Design
  • Equality, diversity and the built environment

2
Inclusive design in planning policy
  • PPS1 (2005)
  • Planning policies should promote high quality
inclusive design in the layout of new
developments and individual buildings in terms of
function and impact, not just for the short term
but over the lifetime of the development.
  • Planning and access for disabled people a good
    practice guide.
  • Inclusive design creates an environment where
everyone can access and benefit from the full
range of opportunities available to members of
society. It aims to remove barriers which create
undue effort, separation or special treatment and
enables everyone to participate equally in
    mainstream activities independently with choice
    and dignity.

3
Inclusive design A process by which places and
spaces are designed and built, managed and used
... with people like us in mind
4
Inclusive design
  • Or to put it another way
  • A place which we can all use with equal ease and
    dignity
  • A space which makes us feel we belong

Castleford Bridge
5
Our space too
  • The way in which race and space manifests
itself in the built environment has to be
understood through the subtle, sensual and
inconspicuous experiences of black and minority
ethnic people in all their diversity.
  • Stephen Lawrence Trust 2008 quoted in
    Inclusion by Design CABE

6
Inequality and exclusion
  • The built environment can contribute to a more
equal, inclusive and cohesive society if the
places where we live, the spaces we enjoy and
facilities we use are accessible and inclusive

Priorities for action
19
Five high priorities for CABE
  • Work with others to increase diversity in the
    professions
  • Promote inclusive design through our activities
  • Champion the use of access specialists
  • Ensure the involvement of disabled people in all
major schemes that come to CABE
  • Lead by example making sure what we do is
inclusive, and CABE staff and family are diverse

20
Five high priorities
  • For the professions
  • Monitor the diversity of the professions
  • Work collaboratively to maximise expertise and
    understanding of equality and inclusion
  • Take care to consult and involve
  • Do more than you need to
  • Use access specialists throughout a project.
  • For local authorities
  • Do more than you need to
  • Consult more, and do it more imaginatively
  • Communicate proposals more effectively
  • Use access schemes and consultants
  • Ensure that local investment and planning promote
    these goals
