Horale is a mainly Christian village situated on
the island of Seram in Maluku province, Indonesia.

Horale is home to 175 families, a total of around
2,300 people.
Maluku province previously experienced intense
anti-Christian violence between 1999 and 2001.

What happened

On the night of 2 May 2008 a mob from the
neighbouring village of Saleman, which is
predominantly Muslim, attacked Horale.

The Muslims burnt down 120 houses, three churches
and the village school.

Four Christians were killed and 56 wounded.
Fifteen hectares of crops were destroyed as well
as 20 fishing boats and 2 motor-cycles.

The villagers fled to the jungle to hide from
the attackers

Many of the women and children are living in the
jungle and surviving by eating coconuts

• Barnabas Fund is helping the victims with

• Food, medication, clothes and other urgent needs.
• Rebuilding homes at an average cost of about
  1,000 each. This buys cement, wood, wood chip,
  roof tiles, glass, paint and nails. The villagers
  will do the building work themselves.
