Title: Putting Together Your Synthesis

1
Putting Together Your Synthesis
2
  • The Introduction
  • Grab Attention in first sentence
  • Introduce Texts Name of each author, titles,
pertinent background info on the authors.
  • THESIS - remember, thesis is your claim, it must
    be tailored to the assignment

3
  • Synthesis Thesis
  • The assignment is to use two texts to support a
    topic/idea.
  • Your thesis must reflect the assignment
  • Your thesis must be concise and include the two
    texts
  • Your thesis must include a concept/idea/claim
    that can be supported.

4
Examples of Synthesis Thesis 1. The media is
responsible for conveying certain ideas to the
public, however, media is frequently misused. The
two texts, Cro-Magnon Karma and Becoming
Members of society support the claim that media
is frequently used to convey negative images and
stereotypes. 2. The texts In our Time by
Ernest Hemingway and The Wasteland by T.S.
Eliot reinforce concepts of alienation within the
modernist literary movement. 3. These two texts
provide evidence for the power of media to
manipulate and control cultural values.

SUMMARIZE
  • Use your Words limit direct quotes
  • When using concepts directly from the text, CITE
  • Limit yourself to noting only the major topics at

  • Spend one paragraph per text summarizing, not one
    paragraph summaring the two together

7
COMPARE/CONTRAST
  • What about these two texts is similar. Similar
viewpoints, authors are similar in their
    background?? Similar structures?
  • What are major places where the text deviate?
    Audience? Purpose??

8
SYNTHESIZE
  • How can these texts be used to support a common
    idea??
  • Present the common claim/topic. Discuss how these
texts would support, present evidence for, or
    strengthen that claim.

9
