RSSB RD Objectives
  • Improve understanding of safety risk
  • Identify and evaluate ways of reducing safety
    risk
  • Identify and evaluate ways of reducing the cost
    of delivering a safe railway
  • Identify and evaluate ways of improving the
    quality and cost-effectiveness of safety
    management

  • Create awareness of the means of improving safety
    or reducing costs (e.g. good practice guides,
    technology transfer)
  • Improve understanding of stakeholder expectations
    for safety, and thereby improve decision-making
  • Through risk, cost, and prioritisation studies,
    support decision-making about the priorities for
    investment
  • Identify and evaluate ways of improving the
    railway industrys communications with
    stakeholders, including passengers and the
    general public

  • Stakeholders in and around the industry are
    engaged in the research programme
  • Outputs from the research programme are of high
    quality, intellectually robust and practically
    oriented
  • Research is conducted and managed in a
    cost-effective way, delivering value for money
  • Research is progressed in a timely manner without
    unnecessary delay and making best use of
    resources
  • The budget for research is appropriate to the
    business need, and expenditure is within budget.

    and the cost of achieving it

    stakeholders
  • The National Rail network of Great Britain
  • Passengers, workforce, and public as affected by
    the railway

    delivering improvements over 2 to 10 years
