What is No Child Left Behind?
  • NCLB is a federal law covering public schools
    that went into effect on January 1, 2002.
  • The goal of NCLB is to have ALL children
    performing on grade level by 2013.

Adequate Yearly Progress
  • AYP
  • Schools must show improvement each year
  • on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in
    Reading Math for 3rd and add on Writing to that
    for the 4th grade.
  • FCAT Science is added in, along with Reading and
    Math for the 5th grade.
  • GRA made AYP

FCAT
  • The FCAT measures how well students have met the
    Sunshine State Standards for Reading Math in
    3rd grade.
  • The Grade 3 Reading Math tests include only
    multiple choice questions.

  • Main Idea Plot Authors Purpose
  • Compare Contrast, Cause Effect
  • Reference Research
  • FCAT Reading Tests contain short stories, poems,
    and informational passages . Graphic displays and
    illustrations related to the questions are used
    to help students grasp the information.
  • There are approximately 50-55 multiple choice
    questions for Grade 3.

  • The FCAT for Math has approximately 45-50
    multiple choice questions. Calculators are not
    permitted.

Achievement Levels
  • Math is scored from Level 1 Level 5
  • Reading is scored from Level 1- Level 5
  • Third graders must score at least a Level 2 in
    Reading in order to be promoted to grade 4.

FL State Statute 1008.25
  • This is our states response to NCLB legislation.
  • It states that students are deficient in reading
    if they score a Level 1 on the grade 3 Reading
    FCAT.
  • Third graders will not be promoted to grade 4 if
    they do not achieve a Level 2 or higher on the
    Reading FCAT.
  • The achievement level is also part of AYP.

READING is So Important
  • Especially in Third Grade
  • Retention in grade 3 will occur regardless of
    previous retentions.
