- Scribes devoted their lives to studying and
copying the law and prophets - They also interpreted and taught the Law
- The Pharisees pledged to live their lives by
strictly adhering to the written Law - They had to swear an oath to keep every last
detail of the Law

- They did things to be seen of men

commands Matt 2820, John 831-32, 2 John 9 - Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the
doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who
abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the
Father and the Son.

- Righteousness is more than mere commandment
keeping - We must draw near to God with our heart.
- Righteousness is made possible by Gods grace
- We can have forgiveness through the blood of His
Son Matt 2628 - If we have truly submitted to his will, He will
help us Phil 413
21- For I say to you, that unless your righteousness
exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom
of heaven.
