  • Shobei had done a full days work on a farm. It
was a boiling hot day. The work and the heat of
the sun had made him so exhausted, that he fell
over his own feet while walking down the steep
    track to his home.
  • He picked himself up, and was about to dust
himself down when he noticed that a blade of
grass had become wedged between his fingers.
Perched on the end of the grass was the most
    beautiful shimmering dragonfly.
  • He shook the grass, expecting the insect to fly
away but it clung to the blade, and didnt
    move.

  • He continued down the hill, and when he was
nearly at the foot, he passed a mother with her
    small son.
  • Mummy, mummy, he cried out, Look at the
beautiful shiny fly!. He turned to Shobei, Can
    I. ?
  • Before he could finish his sentence Shobei
handed him the grass. Of course you can have
    it! he said.

10
  • Thats so kind of you, exclaimed the little
boys mother. Here take these in exchange.
  • She handed Shobei some juicy, ripe oranges which
she had just bought in the market.

  • Shobei thanked her for her kind gift, and
    carried on his way.
  • Before long he passed a merchant staggering up
the hill in the opposite direction. He was
weighed down with heavy bales of cloth, and was
    sweating profusely.
  • You look as if you could do with something to
refresh you said Shobei, Here...... have an
    orange.
  • The merchant accepted the offer with gratitude.
Have another, said Shobei. In fact take two
    more.

13
  • How very kind of you, said the merchant. I
would like to repay your generosity with one of
    my best pieces of cloth.
  • Shobei accepted the gift with thanks. He set
towards home once again, with the magnificent
piece of embroidered silk slung over his shoulder.

feet. then he heard the unmistakeable clatter of
wheels, and the clip-clop of horses hooves.
  • As he made for the safety of the verge, he was
met with a swirl of dust from a magnificent
    carriage.

  • To his astonishment when he looked inside, he
saw none other than the beautiful Princess Lotus
    Flower, the Emperors daughter.
  • I couldnt help noticing that beautiful cloth
you are carrying. It is exactly the colour I
have been looking for. Would you sell it to me
    please?
  • No maam, I wouldnt dream of selling it to you
. But I would be delighted to give it to you as
    a present!

18
  • You are extremely generous said the princess,
but I couldnt accept such a gift without paying
for it. So saying, she ordered the guards to
drive on, pressing a small bag into his hands.
  • When Shobei opened the bag, he couldnt believe
his eyes. It was full of bright new shiny gold
    coins!
