2ANAEMIA
DEFINITION Reduction in the functional mass of
circulating red blood cells is termed anaemia and
it results in the reduction of blood haemoglobin
level
CAUSE The 3 most common causes are, a) blood
loss, b) increased rate of destruction of
RBC, and c) impaired production of RBC
3Currently, diagnosis of progressive ANAEMIA is
made by observing increasing numbers of
RETICULOCYTES in the blood
Control
Peripheral blood smear showing increase in
reticulocyte during drug- induced anaemia in
rabbit
During progression of anaemia

OF HRI EXPRESSION IN HUMAN K562 ERYTHROID CELLS)
B - (1, marker DNA 2, control 3-5, exposed to
100 ug/ml lead for 2,8 and 16h, respectively)
A - (1, marker DNA 2, control 3-5, exposed to
lead acetate conc. of 10,100 and 500 ug/ml,
respectively)
7DIP-STICK METHOD FOR PROGNOSTIC DETECTION OF
ANAEMIA
CURRENT WORK IN PROGRESS 1. PURIFICATION OF
HUMAN HRI 2. PREPARATION OF ANTI-HUMAN
HRI MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES 3. SCREENING OF BLOOD
SAMPLES BY WESTERN BLOT AND RT-PCR 4.
DESIGNING OF DIPSTICK KIT
NEGATIVE CONTROL

8POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF THE HRI DIPSTICK
USER FRIENDLY
RAPID (1.5H) EASY ALTER-NATIVE TO EXISTING TESTS
ABILITY TO MONITOR SUCCESS OF DRUG THERAPY
HIGHLY SENSITIVE
MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS (DRUG- AND HEAVY METAL-
TOXICITY, LEUKEMIAS, MALARIA, LEISHMANIASIS)
