  • Zone vs. Man Marking
  • Zone defense is played by guarding an area of the
    field.
  • Man marking is man to man defense. It is done by
staying with a player away from the ball. The
closer that player is to the ball, the tighter he
    needs to be marked.
  • For the most part we play Zone defense, but we
need to man mark within zones.
  • Rules
  • The center back is the only person that should
follow the ball. This person provides support
for the first defender (the defender on the
    ball).
  • All other backs and midfielders must either mark
a man, or guard a zone.
  • Zones 2, 5 and 6 are the key scoring zones. If
the ball is in one of those zones, everyone in
all 3 of those zones needs to be marked. The
closer a person is to the ball, the tighter he
needs to be marked. The urgency is to get the
    ball out of these zones.
  • No matter where the ball is, everyone in Zone 2
that cannot be put in an offsides position needs
to be man marked. When possible we need to push
up to not allow people into Zone 2.
  • Zones 1, 3, 4 and 7 only require marking if the
ball is in that zone. 1 person should be on the
ball. Other players in the zone need to be
marked. Zones next to the one with the ball need
    to be guarded.
  • If the ball is in Zones 4-7, everyone needs to
pull up as high as possible to limit the space
available in Zones 1-3, and to allow the
    goalkeeper space to operate.
  • If the ball gets played from Zones 1-3 out to
Zones 4-7, everyone needs to push up quickly to
limit the space available in Zones 1-3. The
center back and goalie need to recognize this and
yell for everyone to push up.
