Introduction
  • For the module Internet Entertainment Apps at the
    University of Derby It was required to produce a
    product that shows multiplayer interaction within
    an online environment.
  • The Unreal Tournament 2003/2004 game-engine
    produced by Epic Software was chosen to provide
    an environment in which to play the level.
  • The Unreal Tournament is a 1st Person Shooter
    game where the gamer takes control of a character
    and moves it via the keyboard and mouse.

Aims and Goals
  • The aims of the level produced were to
  • Show player-player interactivity
  • Show player-computer interactivity
  • Produce a level, capable of being played on a
    local machine
  • Produce a level, capable of being played over a
    network or the Internet

Level Concept
  • The initial idea for the level was to create a
    themed environment in which the player could
    interact with others and computer controlled
    characters.
  • It was decided to design a level in a past theme
    since this would provide a known environment
    without the constraints of making a precise
    level. This would have allowed people to judge
    its accuracy of representation rather than the
    gameplay.

Level Genre
  • The Unreal Tournament 2004 game-engine allows
    different types of gameplay, each with its own
    aims and goals.
  • Death Match
  • CTF
  • Domination
  • It was decided that CTF would provide the best
    opportunity to show player-to-player interaction
    because teamwork is required in order for a team
    to win.

Level Objective and Goals
  • The objectives and goals of CTF-Castle level are
    as follows
  • Two teams of up to 16 players per side start in
    their own castles.
  • Each team needs to capture the oppositions flag
    without having their own captured.
  • The level will allow sniping rifles to make it
    challenging to go from one castle to another
    without being hit.
  • Players need to work as a team in order to
    protect their flag and capture that of the
    opposition.
  • The most important aim and goal is for players to
    want to come back and continue to play the level.

Testing Feedback
  • In order to gain an indication of what needed to
    be improved, an Alpha release of the level was
    uploaded onto the Internet.
  • Feedback from other users was utilised to
    redesign and enhance the level.
  • Modified to include path nodes that helped AI to
    navigate the environment.
  • Additional spawn points
  • Ambient lighting reduced
  • Trees and clouds
