Schizophrenia
  • Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling
    brain disease.
  • People with schizophrenia often suffer terrifying
symptoms such as hearing internal voices not
heard by others, hallucinations, threatened by
    voices.
  • schizophrenia can be similar at times to other
major brain disorders such as bipolar disorder
    (Manic/Depression) or even major depression.

4
Symptoms
  • delusions
  • hallucinations
  • grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
  • negative symptoms
  • cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia
  • Disordered Thinking
  • Emotional Expression
  • Normal Versus Abnormal

5
Medications
  • Mellaril deals with a mental disorder known as
schizophrenia, this drug can cause severe loss of
contact reality, Because Mellaril has been known
to cause dangerous heartbeat irregularities, it
is usually prescribed only when at least two
other medications have failed. Many of the drugs
    prescribed for heartbeat irregularities.
  • Antipsychotic medications have been available
since the mid-50s. They have greatly improved the
    outlook for individual patients. These
medications reduce the psychotic symptoms of
schizophrenia and usually allow the patient to
    function more effectively and appropriately.
  • newer antipsychotic drugs, such as risperidone,
Risperdal and olanzapine, Zyprexa, are safer than
the older drugs or clozapine, and they also may
    be better tolerated.

6
Delusions
  • False beliefs strongly held in spite of
invalidating evidence, especially as a symptom of
    mental illness for example,
  • Paranoid delusions, or delusions of persecution,
for example believing that people are "out to
get" you, or the thought that people are doing
things when there is no external evidence that
    such things are taking place.
  • Delusions of reference - when things in the
environment seem to be directly related to you
even though they are not. For example it may seem
as if people are talking about you or special
personal messages are being communicated to you
    through the TV, radio.
  • Delusions of grandeur - for example when you
believe that you are very special or have special
    powers or abilities

7
Hallucinations
  • Hallucinations can take a number of different
    forms
  • Visual (seeing things that are not there or that
    other people cannot see),
  • Auditory (hearing voices that other people can't
    hear,
  • Tactile (feeling things that other people don't
feel or something touching your skin that isn't
    there.)
  • Olfactory (smelling things that other people
cannot smell, or not smelling the same thing that
    other people do smell)
  • Gustatory experiences (tasting things that isn't
    there)

8
Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia
  • Cognitive symptoms refer to the difficulties with
concentration and memory. These can include
  • disorganized thinking
  • slow thinking
  • difficulty understanding
  • poor concentration
  • poor memory
  • difficulty expressing thoughts
  • difficulty integrating thoughts, feelings and
    behavior

9
Negative symptoms
  • These are the lack of important abilities.
  • lack of emotion - the inability to enjoy
    acitivities as much as before
  • Low energy - the person sits around and sleeps
    much more than normal
  • lack of interest in life, low motivation
  • Affective flattening - a blank, blunted facial
experession or less lively facial movements or
    physical movements.
  • Alogia (difficulty or inability to speak)
  • Inappropriate social skills or lack of interest
or ability to socialize with other people
  • Inability to make friends or keep friends, or not
    caring to have friends
  • Social isolation - person spends most of the day
alone or only with close family

10
Disordered Thinking
  • Schizophrenia often affects a persons ability to
    think straight.
  • Thoughts may come and go rapidly the person may
not be able to concentrate on one thought for
very long and may be easily distracted, unable to
    focus attention.
  • People with schizophrenia may not be able to sort
out what is relevant and what is not relevant to
    a situation.
  • The person may be unable to connect thoughts into
logical sequences, can make conversation very
    difficult.
  • If people cannot make sense of what an individual
is saying, they are most likely to become
uncomfortable and tend to leave that person
    alone.
